One of the more infuriating and inexplicable twists in modern American policing is the way in which they are able to bring violent white supremacists with blood-drenched hands into custody safely and unharmed while the most pedestrian of interactions with Black Americans usually leads to brutal violence and often death. While police defenders cry over and over that all we need is sensitivity training and police reforms, every day brings us the story of yet another appalling violation of human dignity that should prove to everyone that the police are not reformable and have no intention of changing their behaviors.

A simple traffic stop got out of control after officers refused her request to be only touched by a female officer due to her religious beliefs. Enraged at the pushback, the police officers became “increasingly aggressive and [threw] the plaintiff to the ground.” The lawsuit alleges that Officer Tuhin Khan then “pressed his knee down on Plaintiff’s neck and in her back” while she yelled that she couldn’t breathe.

Alhanafi was dragged across the ground to the point where her undergarments were exposed — deliberate humiliation by the police — before being shoved roughly into the car sideways as they yelled “stupid b*tch” at her.

Having sustained injuries during her assault, she demanded that they take her to a hospital or render her some kind of medical assistance, which they refused to do. The woman was left with a hairline fracture in her neck.

What ALL Americans need to realize is that if someone in a uniform can do this to ANYONE and get away with it, they can do it to you. So many right wing nut jobs think this can only happen to people of color. They are fooling themselves.

This is criminal behavior, I don't care who is doing it.

4. Too many thugs in our PDs. It's time to re-vet every person who carries a badge in this country.

We need better vetting in the future, and much longer training for those we arm & give this kind of authority to. In almost every situation brute force should not be the first choice and yet over and over it is, even as the police have proven that they can diffuse tense situations without killing or causing harm when the lawbreakers are pissed-off, armed white men, not people of color.

8. You're absolutely right, of course. The laws need to change drastically as to who in this country

is allowed to murder another human being. It's insane that things are like they are to begin with, and it's hurting our friends of color WAAAAYYYY out of proportion.

It's training, it's vetting...like you said. But even the law making it ok to kill is wrong. If a gun is used AT ALL by police, it should be to shoot a hand with a gun in it, and no other reason. All these brute force choke holds, and kneeling on someone's back....THAT is "cruel and unusual punishment" right there, and is SPECIFICALLY made against the law in our constitution.

There is so much that is terribly wrong. If police are so AFRAID that they're going to be shot, then we need massive gun control, which most of the police are AGAINST! because most of them are gun nuts with a badge.

9. The officer's name

He has a Muslim-sounding surname (Khan), so it sounds like his police training may have over-ridden his religious beliefs and practices. I know I'm making some assumptions about him based on scant info, but I couldn't help wondering. I couldn't find his face on Google Images, FWIW.

snip-An African American Muslim woman has accused the NYPD of using excessive force during an arrest and violating her religious freedom when officers ignored her repeated requests to be searched by a female officer.

On the night of July 12th, Rayhanah Alhanafi, 20, was driving her car on 145th Street in Upper Manhattan with her mother, when police officers pulled her over for a traffic violation. By her own account, detailed in a complaint to the Civilian Complaint Review Board, she complied with their requests to provide her driver’s license as well as proof of purchase for her license plates, which an Officer Khan claimed were fake.

Officer Khan (the complaint only provides his last name) asked her to step out of the car and said he was arresting her for forged plates and a license that had been previously suspended. In response, Alhanafi said she requested that Khan and the three other male officers not touch her.

“Complainant informed Officer Khan that she was Muslim and, due to her sincerely-held religious beliefs, she requested that a female officer search her,” reads the CCRB complaint. “Ms. Alhanafi made the request for a female officer at least three times.”
