MSNBC Ousts Contributor Pat Buchanan Over Racist Book

MSNBC Ousts Contributor Pat Buchanan Over Racist Book | Conservative contributor Pat Buchanan’s tenure at MSNBC may have finally come to an end. AP reports that MSNBC president Phil Griffin has indicated the controversial former presidential candidate will not be allowed back on the network after the release of his latest book. “Suicide of a Superpower” has been roundly condemned for its racially-charged content, including chapters titled “The End of White America” and “The Death of Christian America.” Griffin said, “When Pat was on his book tour, because of the content of the book, I didn’t think it should be part of the national dialogue much less part of the dialogue on MSNBC.” As ThinkProgress has reported, Buchanan has a long history of bigotry and has made many offensive statements while in the network’s employ. 275,000 people signed a petition calling on MSNBC to fire him.

I haven't seen the McLaughlin circus in a long time but if you look at the end of the show you'll see whose really paying the bills. IRC GE was one of the sponsors. It runs on a lot of PBS stations because the costs are underwritten so it costs the network nothing to run. PBS plays their own corporate games. Tax money generally goes to the mechanical side of operating stations...

And not a peep of this in the national press when it happened.

Condit wasn't the greatest guy (or Democrat) around, but they railroaded him something awfully and there was no real evidence to ever link him to the murder...just that he had an affair with Levy.

Sun Jan 8, 2012, 10:49 PM

you can't just hire a well-known and demonstrably racist, anti-semitic bigot,
proceed to keep on a well-known and demonstrably racist, anti-semitic bigot,
after he continued and repeatedly provided further proof that he's a racist, anti-semitic bigot,
and then, when you finally fire him, plausibly claim the reason was that...
he's a racist, anti-semitic bigot.

the obvious truth is that he was hired and retained in spite of his being a well-known and demonstrably racist, anti-semitic bigot (or perhaps even BECAUSE he was a well-known and demonstrably racist, anti-semitic bigot) but the cost-benefit analysis somehow showed him to be worth it, and that simply became no longer the case.

not likely because the book or the book tour changed him image any, but simply because the old fool is simply no longer as relevant or as interesting as he used to be. that is, it has NOTHING to do with his negatives -- it's his positives that are now lacking.

for fighting Hitler instead of Stalin? Yet they kept him, and KO was dumped for a lot less, Ed Shultz gets suspended for exposing RW psycho talk. The real problem is that the media is run by White Males, break up the media via the Sherman anti-trust Act. Force diversity in the airwaves.

MSNBC is taking extra steps to gain credibility in the NEWs media. FOX has so corrupted our air waves betrayed the trust of the american people, that it will take some doing. But, it also, looks like CBS is heading in the right direction with its new morning program. We have to have truth in order to make responsible decisions for the future of our nation. GOOD RIDDANCE Pat Buchanan!! Time to retire.

Not certainly, as they promoted him with full knowledge and I stopped watching the first time Rachel had Pat on and smiled and called him Uncle. Watched a few minutes of Al to see Al, checked in on Larry O once, when he was going after the network, other than that, do not watch them at all, due to Pat.

I'm being very cynical here to make a point about discussions that have been taking place elsewhere on this board, especially with respect to Ron Paul.

In those threads, people have constantly made the argument that it's legitimate to speak up for Paul because he's talking about things like ending the war, "empire," certain narrowly defined first-amendment issues, and legal weed. The fact that he's a raging racist and homophobe, has dangerously insane economic views, and wants to shrink government till it can fit in the bathtub to drown, are immaterial. As the argument goes, these other things are important, so people should listen to him.

So why shouldn't MSNBC let people "listen" to Pat Buchanan, since on those rare occasions, he also has isolationist anti-war views, etc.

The reason should be obvious: because the wrongs far outweigh the rights, and you never give a platform to a racist. They should have fired Buchanan years ago. He's totally fringe. (And so is Ron Paul.) But if you're all for "listening to" Paul, you should be for "listening to" Buchanan as well. Let's separate the men from the boys on this one--try to wiggle out of it!
