If Romney were president, the youth had best be prepared to see the draft return.

There is no way in hell this country is not going to start another war with Romney at the helm, the neocons and the huge MIC profits. And Romney wants to throw even more $$$$ at defense for huge MIC profits. The youth will see the flag waved, the bible clutched, patriotism spouted and off to war they go with the draft required to replenish the fallen youth. It would be Bush on steroids.

The last thing they want is for people to pay attention.
The better way is to create an economy where the only jobs are in the military and that is where the youth will go. Couple no jobs with a huge propaganda campaign and there you have it.

bringing the war into middle class homes was one of the things that made war so unpopular.

Their strategy is to tank the economy so that the only job a kid can get is as cannon fodder.

There will not be a draft. The military doesn't want it, Congress won't vote for it and no President will sign it.

You can do more with one volunteer than you can with three draftees. I am a veteran who has been in the military while there was a draft and after the draft ended. The generals don't want anything to do with another draft.

I have mixed feelings about that. If the draft returns if won't be so easy for them to gin up wars as everyone's children will be subject to go (even Romney's 5 strapping sons if they were the right age). As it is now, only a small percentage of the population is fighting the wars and thus only a small percentage of the families are taking the brunt of wars ravages, which is certainly not fair, so in that way, return of the draft is more egalitarian. But who wants a draft but warmongers. How 'bout we keep the warmongers way away from the reins of power and try something else? I know it sounds naive but God!, we're in the 21st century now, the concept of war should be outmoded by now. Let's expose the warmongers for who they really are, profiteers after the blood money that can be made off wars, some 100 to even 1000 times higher than in peace time (read Gen. Smedley Butler's book, "War is a Racket",

).

return of the draft would not necessarily be a bad thing because it puts ALL people's kids at risk and not just the children of those who are not well off.

My eldest's boyfriend is in excellent shape, but the Army's constantly riding his ass about a couple of extra pounds. He's already shed a lot since he started living here (my wife's a 3rd degree black belt and rides his ass even harder than the Army). We're also vegetarian so his diet has improved in that time. The Army is rejecting a shitload of volunteers simply because they don't even come close to meeting the physical requirements. They would have to seriously relax the standards to get enough cannon fodder for another war.
