Romney Invests In “Number One Geopolitical Foe” Russia

No wonder he sang "America the Beautiful" off-key

Mitt Romney earlier this year, speaking about Russia:

This is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe. They - they fight every cause for the world's worst actors. The I - the idea that he has some more flexibility in mind for Russia is very, very troubling, indeed.

Mitt Romney's portfolio:

Romney Invests In “Number One Geopolitical Foe” Russia

Mitt Romney acquired and sold shares last year in the politically powerful Russian gas giant Gazprom. Ann and Mitt Romney's family trust return, released Friday, shows Romney sold his Gazprom stock at a loss last September in advance of election season.

So Mitt Romney, as recently as last year, was a part-owner in what he says is without question America's number one geopolitical foe. And since he hasn't released 2012 financial information, we don't know if he has engaged in any transactions involving Russia this year, so he may very well continue to be invested in the country.

Basically there are two options here. You can either conclude that Mitt Romney is (or at least recently was) in bed with America's biggest enemy. Or you can conclude that when Mitt Romney shot off his mouth about Russia he didn't have a clue what he was talking about.

Romney has been fiercely hawkish toward Russia while on the campaign trail. The GOP nominee told CNN's Wolf Blitzer in March that Russia is America's "number one geopolitical foe." Again in July, Romney told Blitzer that "in terms of geopolitics....Russia is the number one adversary."

During his first bid for the presidency, Romney told reporters that his trustee, Boston-based lawyer Brad Malt, had been working to clean up the candidate's investments.

"My trustee has indicated publicly that he will make an effort to make sure that my investments to the extent possible and practical, will conform with my political positions," Romney said in 2007.

Roosevelt spoke:

And it goes almost without saying, too, that we must continue to provide our Government with the funds necessary for waging war not only by the payment of taxes -- which, after all, is an obligation of American citizenship -- but also by the purchase of War Bonds -- an act of free choice which every citizen has to make for himself under the guidance of his own conscience.

Whatever else any of us may be doing, the purchase of War Bonds and stamps is something all of us can do and should do to help win the war.

I am happy to report tonight that it is something which -- something nearly everyone seems to be doing. Although there are now approximately sixty-seven million persons who have or earn some form of income (including the armed forces), eighty-one million persons or their children have already bought war bonds. They have bought more than six hundred million individual bonds. Their purchases have totaled more than thirty-two billion dollars. These are the purchases of individual men, women and children. Anyone who would have said this was possible a few years ago would have been put down as a starry-eyed visionary. But of such visions (however) is the stuff of America (fashioned).
....
And every one -- every man or woman or child -- who bought a War Bond helped -- and helped mightily!

There are still many people in the United States who have not bought War Bonds, or who have not bought as many as they can afford. Everyone knows for himself whether he falls into that category or not. In some cases his neighbors know too (also). To the consciences of those people, this appeal by the President of the United States is very much in order.

For all of the things which we use in this war, everything we send to our fighting Allies, costs money -- a lot of money. One sure way every man, woman and child can keep faith with those who have given, and are giving, their lives, is to provide the money which is needed to win the final victory.

I urge all Americans to buy War Bonds without stint. Swell the mighty chorus to bring us nearer to victory!

Paying your full taxes and investing in America was the patriotic thing to do in times of trouble.

Since the crash of 2008, Mitt Romney obviously thinks of his own prosperity before America's.

"A blind trust is an age old ruse, if you will.... You can always tell a blind trust what it can and cannot do. you give a blind trust rules." Romney in 1994
