I've been hesitant in the past, but after following previous elections and this one, I now believe the electoral college to be antiquated. The president should be chosen by the will of the people and not a process which is determined by a minority of swing states. Plus it would force the republican party to abandon their racist supporters and change their platform if they ever hope to be competitive.
I'm sorry it took this long for me to come around.

(31,011 posts)Before I hadn't really thought it through too much. It's been in the last month or so after listening to tRump, thinking about past elections and all that is what got me thinking through it again and I changed my position on it.

(16,838 posts)the Electoral College, I remember talking to my parents and grandparents about how crazy it was. They all laughed about it. They were pretty neutral on the issue of whether it should be kept. When I went to school, all of the students who cared about the issue, who admittedly weren't many, were in favor of abolishing it. The only reason we still have it is because Americans are too lazy to pass an amendment.

I'm glad you are continuing the conversation. Everyone needs to know that the EC MUST GO if we are to achieve a racially just society.

(26,044 posts)...but it wont happen, because it would require a constitutional amendment and we werent even able to pass the Equal Rights Amendment back in the far-more-liberal 1970s. Too many small states gain extra power from it, and theyll never pass a repeal.

How are you going to get that through two Houses of Congress, the president and 3/4s of the States' legislatures?
Let's focus on battles we can win. First, let's make certain Trump is voted out in November. The real work begins after that goal is accomplished.

(4,568 posts)Now let's think about apportioning senators by population. As long as we're eliminating anti-democracy facets of our government, let's trash 'em all!
