My 15 yr old daughter came out earlier this month. I've known since she was a toddler, the wife just thought she was a 'tomboy'. The reason she had to come out - her girlfriend asked her to the Jr. ROTC ball - o.k. to do since DADT was repealed.

She's been so happy after getting that off of her chest and being able to spend quality time with her girlfriend. I'm just so glad she is in the fully supportive family (and UU church) that she's in!

Time after time I've been told by mothers that they knew all along but dad was the one who didn't know. If there had been a bet, of the families I know, dad would have lost, not mom.

Yes, a very selfish reason. The other reason is you child will be despised by so many people and you don't want them to go through it. Yes, in the long run it makes them stronger and gives them character but it still is hard to watch. My sweet cousin is a great teacher but the public schools are not really open to her. She's been lucky to find work in private schools but with some difficulty. Hard to watch for me, even harder for her mom.
