American College of Emergency Physicians Snaps Back At Romney Remarks

Romney’s remarks about emergency room care have drawn a rebuke from the American College of Emergency Physicians: http://OFA.BO/3H8M1r

Mitt Romney’s comments in a CBS “60 Minutes” interview Sunday that emergency rooms provide care to people who don’t have insurance drew a rebuke from a group representing emergency-room doctors and a jab from the Obama campaign.

But the question and answer weren’t so clear.

Mr. Romney was asked whether he believed the government had a responsibility to provide health care to those who don’t have it. He replied: “Well, we do provide care for people who don’t have insurance… If someone has a heart attack, they don’t sit in their apartment and die. We pick them up in an ambulance, and take them to the hospital, and give them care. And different states have different ways of providing for that care.”

Earlier in the day, the American College of Emergency Physicians President David Seaberg said in a written statement that “emergency care is not health insurance.” The Obama campaign also released a web video Monday evening attacking Mr. Romney’s response.
