Just threw a hissey fit in a store in Cape May, NJ...

"Just for Laughs" had a President Obama punching bag in the window. I told them I would never buy another thing in their stores (including "Kaleidoscope" that is next door) or the two other stores they own in Cape May. Also selling a tee shirt with Bush's picture that says "Do you miss me yet?". I also told them I would inform all of my friends from the Pittsburgh Area that vacation in Cape May not to patronize their stores. I was not very quiet about it either. What a disgraceful thing to sell.

Sexual harassment isn't the ONLY basis for such an action, although it's far too common.

but a PUNCHING BAG of the President? Where does it stop? A noose joke? Hanging a chair in effigy? Disrespect is disrespect. I have seen places with all types of political products, but the key is ALL types. Not ones that are obviously a statement about who runs the store. If it was a stupid t-shirt, fine, but a punching bag? Or anything that denotes violence... is a very good reason not to shop there.

"satire" oh, I only wish that people knew what the word really meant.

32. Equal opportunity offender
Tue Sep 25, 2012, 10:49 PM
Sep 2012

I'm going to come to the defense of a fellow low-number poster (what is this discouragement of low-count posters - there really are sincere progressive Democrats who simply haven't posted frequently). I wouldn't be surprised if a store like this also sold similar, or even the same, anti-Romney material. It's possible the store owners simply sells what they think will sell. The punching bag, to me, is over the line, encouraging physical violence. The Bush "miss me yet" shirt has the same saying as countless posters, bumper stickers, even billboards. It mystifies me that anyone would feel this way, but some do, and they have the right to express this sentiment.

And people have the right to boycott the store and encourage others to do the same. As I said, the punching bag goes too far, but I don't think I could discourage people from boycotting a store just because they sell T-shirts that offend some segment of the population. I've been to the Jersey shore, and this covers half the merchants on the boardwalk.

In the range of things to be offended by, given the daily statements and lies of Romney, Ryan, Fox commentators, Republican strategists and lawmakers, this would be pretty low on my list. I have looked at the websites that sell "political" bumper stickers. In their "Conservative" category, I see a lot of slogans that seem stupid, wrong, offensive, or simply pointless. They invariably also sell "Liberal" bumper stickers, which may not offend me, but are often just as stupid or pointless.

To me, so what? I'll save my outrage for the real offenders, who are all too numerous (hey, I live in a state that elected Paul LePage governor, albeit by an election fluke, so I am outraged every time I turn on the local news).

Don't you ever tell a local business you like or don't like something they do/stock/serve..?

I tell my local hardware when a product they sell does a good job or a bad one.

I tell my local used-bookstore what I'd like to have, and they try to fulfill that request. I'm grateful and I tell them.

I tell people who do good work that I'll recommend them to others. (I generally try to be positive, so I don't promise to crap on their reputation.. just not recommend them.)

feedback and asking for things you want are a little bit different than free advice about what to stock.

During my own seven years in business I got tired of free advice, I thought my "customers" could have given less advice and bought more books. Either that, or I should have gone into business where I would be paid to listen to people's advice about how to run my business. Sorta like Lucy with her little psychology booth.

"Obama Hater" is a really broad category.

It runs the gamut from "Snotty libertarian whining about the gubmint stealing his money" to "Crazy-ass militia member that advocates killing someone every time he opens his mouth". If there's one characteristic common to the entire range, it's to Never. Shut. Up. Avoiding politics doesn't work because they're not going to let you. Eventually dealing with them becomes more emotionally draining than it's worth.

So I'd cut her some slack. We don't know her story.

It didn't used to be such a problem. You mostly had to avoid people around presidential elections. They weren't even too bad in off-year elections. Now Fox/Rush and their ilk keep them whipped up all the time. I couldn't imagine living like that.

Family or not, if someone is this toxic, you have a responsibility to yourself to distance yourself from them.

People who want to kill Obama, who are racist and hate-filled, are like poison to the soul and to the body. That he is your brother makes no difference here.

It's not about Obama or about politics, really. It's about protecting yourself from toxic people.

And there is nothing sad, immoral or wrong with not allowing them to spew their vile hatred in your life.

58. "a really broad category"
Wed Sep 26, 2012, 12:22 PM
Sep 2012

Apparently not containing a single decent human being.

Is "Bush Hater" or "Romney Hater" a really broad category?

Back when Bush was President, I hardly ever shut up about him. It was like I was on fire, because it seemed like every day brought a new outrage from Bush. I used this as my signature line for my email '"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."
George W Bush, accidentally telling the truth'

and believed it was true. It was like there was an "Injustice league" just sitting around and plotting "How can we get more power for ourselves, and how can we further stick it to the working class?"

So I hardly ever shut up about it.

And some people didn't want to deal with it. I sent an email to a family history list. THe email was about a distant relative in the Loomis family who was a state level politician in Nebraska. I didn't mention Bush at all.

Except for my email signature line which was automatic.

But one "Bush lover" on the list could not handle that. He sent an email to the list saying that my email was awful, how dare I include that last line, and I should be reprimanded for bringing politics into the discussion, and so on.

Now it seems the situation is reversed. "Dealing with them" seems to be an issue because of intolerance. We cannot tolerate that they hate the President, so we have to "deal with them" rather than just accept that they have a different point of view.

Maybe it is sisters and brothers, and every family is different. My own brother, though, is pretty much my best friend. In fact, growing up I sorta felt like I did not need friends, because I had a brother. so getting divided by politics, even though i take my politics very seriously - is unthinkable.

Wed Sep 26, 2012, 02:07 PM

A very broad category. The reason I said that it runs the gamut from "Snotty libertarian whining about the gubmint stealing his money" to "Crazy-ass militia member that advocates killing someone every time he opens his mouth", is because there's a world of difference between the two positions. As they move further toward the latter position, their redeeming qualities become fewer and further between and carry progressively less weight when contrasted with their horrible ones. There's no such thing as a part-time Neo-Nazi. They're pretty much all Nazi all the time. Same goes for a Klansman.

That's not to say her family members are neo-nazis or Klansmen, just that we shouldn't judge her for writing them off since we don't know where they fall or what they're like. Some people are bad enough writing them off is the ONLY thing you can do to protect your sanity, and we all have different levels of bad that we'll tolerate. If contact with anyone, family member or no, is detrimental to your mental health, it's best to sever contact. If having to tolerate hating the president is all you have to deal with, you're lucky that your family are relatively sane.

Politics should not surpass family relationships. I have family and friends of all political persuasions. The value of a person is not determined by his/her political affiliation.

78. Would you allow a racist family member to use racial epithets and slurs
Thu Sep 27, 2012, 02:24 AM
Sep 2012

against your friends or family of said race?

Would you tolerate them using racial slurs in correspondence with you? In front of your children? In public when you are out together?

I wouldn't. Especially when you have asked said family member to stop doing so in your presence.

Just because someone is family doesn't mean they get a free pass to be an anti-social creep who spews vile, racist, hate-filled crap.

You don't know the poster, so at least respect her decision to do what is best in her life. If you enjoy being around hate-filled racists merely because they're "family" that is your choice. To expect others to do so is presumptuous and juvenile.

I edited my response. In the original post she only mentioned that her brother hated Obama, not that he was a racist. Upon further reading, I see that the brother is a jerk. Although, I think that it's a shame that some families come apart over politics.

27. I refuse to buy gas or eat in a diner with a tv always on Fox, and I told them so
Tue Sep 25, 2012, 10:35 PM
Sep 2012

First, in the diner, I asked nicely for them to change it to a non-political station (the owner refused)
then I said I cannot eat in a place that promotes lies and while they have a right to do what they please, I don't have to eat there, and I would tell anyone I know

plenty of diners in NY and NJ

one would think if every Democrat did something little like this, eventually it will stop

I figure in a gas station near me that I haven't stepped foot in for six years now, they lost at least 300 fillups from me alone, and about 3000 from at least 10 people I know(let alone any food soda or coffee or chips, etc they also might have sold us.

consumers have more power than they realize. There is always another place even if we have to be a little incovienced, it is worth it.

29. there was a deli named Caruso's, in the town I'm from. And they were All Fox All the Time

We ate there once, and vowed not to come back. All of their stuff in there was hard core Fox News style, and it blared from the tv all the time. Apparently it didn't go over well, as they're out of business... I'm sure the other people in the predominantly blue city, found it unappetizing. Why do people DO that??? I've walked out of many businesses because of it. Just put on the golf channel for heaven's sake. lol

46. Does Fox or right wing pay for placement to show up? (i.e. that Fox comes on when tv turns on)
Wed Sep 26, 2012, 05:12 AM
Sep 2012

I put this on a different thread about the NYC subway ads, but it applies here and possibly in its own thread-

It would be interesting to find out how much secret payment of having Fox be the default there is out there.
(Sort of like when you go to movie and actor holds a can of soda, Coke or Pepsi pay for that moment either directly or indirectly).
Is it just a case here that the last few years, Fox nationwide somehow paid either the cable providers(which are just a few major corporations) so that the tv instantly turns on to Fox and someone has to take the time to change it(which sometimes might be a PITA for a regular employee to even find the remote and for a customer to bother to ask the owner/manager).

I have attempted to ask and not once has anyone in person, answered my question. The diner owner just said he won't change the station but did not reply to the payment question.

I know Fox bought out nationwide the one minute radio news every hour that ABC or CBS used to provide.

If Fox is paying the default to happen, then somehow we all need to nationwide attempt to get some one else to bid more next time for their station to be the default.

(Here is an example I know is true-when you stay at any disney place, either in L.A. or Orlando, their tv when you turn it on 100% of the time is their own infomercial park station.
So that indeed is possible.
And my own tv I have it set to Turner Classic movie to come up. So it's not random.

Question is-are the owners of the stores/hotels/restaurants/bars paid to default to Fox?
And are anti-Obama shirts/posters/novelties pushed to be out front and center in store windows somehow? Are people paying for or getting paid for these placements?

(this maybe should be a separate thread).

I'm actually okay with anti-Obama stuff, so long as the place also sells anti-Romney stuff or sold anti-Bush stuff 4 years ago.

I've written Catalog Favorites about this, and told them I would stop buying from them. The quality of their stuff is also dipping down into Spenser Gifts territory - lots of toilet and fart humor and more trashy stuff, but I didn't mention that.

(2004) I was looking to buy two good futons for my family room. I wanted to do business with a local and not a large furniture store and found 2 locally-owned stores that carried futons. The first one was really close to my house. I walked in and while I was looking around I saw a Kerry punching bag prominently displayed. Now, I REALLY didn't like Kerry (I was a Dean supporter) but I walked up to the person behind the counter and asked him if he was the manager. He told me he was the owner. I told him that I was in the market to buy two futons, two mattresses, the pillows and the covers that day but because of his offensive punching bag I'd be taking my business elsewhere. I also told him that it was a really stupid move as he was in danger of alienating 1/2 his potential customers. You don't even have to go to business school to figure that one out. I ended up buying it from another store much farther away from my house. Iirc I spent about $1500 that day.

Of course the sad news is that the company that I bought from didn't survive the economic downturn. Mr. Punching Bag did.

51. I did something similar at a store in my town
Wed Sep 26, 2012, 09:52 AM
Sep 2012

I live near Annapolis, MD. A pet store in the shopping center where we do our food shopping sells hemp bedding for small animals. I have 3 rats, so go through a fair amount of bedding. I've tried it all - recycled newspaper, corn cob - but found that the hemp did the best at odor controlling. Over the summer the store was enlarged and remodeled and one day I was doing some grocery shopping, realized that I needed bedding and walked over to the pet store to get it. When I got to the counter, the clerk was busy helping a customer, so I waited. While waiting I had a chance to look at the magnets for cars. Along with the usual "I [heart] my Bichon Frise." and "Great Danes are great!" were a couple that really bothered me. They said things like "My dog is a Republican too.", "My mutt is smarter than your president." and "Republicans Rule! Democrats Drool!". There were no similar signs for Democrats, although admittedly the "My Mutt" sign could be considered non-partisan. The other customer completed their transaction as I was finishing reading the signs and the clerk indicated he was ready to help me. I put my bag of hemp bedding on the counter, told him that I was appalled by the sign selection and would not be purchasing anything today or ever if that was the store owner's philosophy. The clerk just shrugged. I told him that the next time he saw the owner or manager he should mention that a customer had decided not to patronize their store, even though it was the only one in the area that sold a product she liked, because of their partisan politics. I really do miss that hemp bedding, but not enough to go back to that store.

56. I would expect that in Cape May - NJ is not as "blue" as you think
Wed Sep 26, 2012, 10:26 AM
Sep 2012

Cape May is very gentrified with very high end condos and hotels and stores to match. I'd be willing to bet that the patrons of those stores are likely to be Republican. I'd also like to point out that the blue part of NJ is mostly in the northeast part of the state. Cape May is as far as you can get from those areas (3.5 hours driving from Bergen County in the extreme northeast) and in a part of the state that is solid red.

I am fortunate to work for a progressive-minded company. We publish books and related children's products.

In 2009, we came out with a "Welcome to the White House" play set that has paper dolls of the President, First Lady, and various other figures (WH has strict prohibitions on depictions of Malia and Sasha, btw). They have different outfits to wear and the book opens to three scenes of the White House. It's accompanied by an informative children's book about the White House. So it's not a piece of junk.

We have a customer who stops by our booth at every goddamn trade show. "You still selling that Obama thing?" "Yes." "I'm never buying from you again." "Oh, well."

I doubt it. You are free to shop wherever you want to, but why the hissy fit? I would only have complained to the staff if it had portrayed something truly offensive (racist or overtly sexist). Otherwise, it's freedom of speech.

For the record, I once bought an anti Bush T-shirt in Provincetown, Cape Cod that I only dared to wear in certain areas.
