Y'all be careful out there - it's Rutting Season

Co-worker of DH was hit by buck out of nowhere last night, driving on a two-lane highway on the outskirts of small town. Came charging out of a cemetery, co-worker never saw him just "plow!" Co-worker is okay but extremely shaken up.

Newbies to the country life, every fall, October to November, Bucks awash of in hormones (think musth in elephants) and want to screw every female and fight every male, which includes vehicles. It seems the bigger the vehicle, the more likely bucks will want to ram it.

Be especially careful at dawn and twilight but after dark, really, anytime. People die somewhere during this time being rammed by bucks.

1. Funny you posted this...

Had two huge white tail bucks eating my mums last night and clicking their horns on the copper planters. Our dogs were going crazy and the bucks didnít flinch.

2. Yup.

Our neighborhood is overrun with deer. They have no fear of humans or dogs. Weíve stopped gardening because they destroy everything. Whenever we let the dog out, we have to do a perimeter check of our yard and the surrounding yards. Last November, we had a buck and two does use our back yard as the deer Motel 6 for almost 24 hours. And we live in the city.

This morning, just after dawn, as I headed out for my morning walk, a buck went charging down the cross street in front of me. First one Iíve seen all year..and a sign I need to move my walks to later in the morning. Tis the season..sigh..

7. Motel 6, wow I'll bet that was a sight & sound to behold.

Where we used to live, there was a buck with a harem. They used the high power lines easement as a highway and we would wake up and they would feed in the front yard. I can't remember but I think it was a crabapple tree. Then he would turn and just walk down the middle of our street to the easement. We'd see flocks of turkeys using the easement also.

We all gotta share or we'll be reminded if we forget

5. We live in the suburbs and they're everywhere

Mainly taking residence in wooded areas around neighborhoods and many disrupted by new communities and roads being build.

We have a huge ten point that lives near the boat ramp across from our house and he's gorgeous, but this time of year they do love to run. Always pays to be extra careful, especially at night and early morning. Thanks for the reminder Hestia.

6. You are very welcome. People at work had family members die from being hit. You just never

think about it until someone is hit. Rutting seems to start here when the nights go down to the 50's and the Bucks seem to come out and say we'll show you who really owns this place.

Be safe and be well
