There may be something in the ads that pay for each unique hit. So if everyone at DU were to click on it - that would be costly. However if one person just decide to click on it 1000 times they it would be useless since it wouldn't be unique hits.

I think they can have ads removed they think are not appropriate.

There is some search algorithm that determines what the best ads are to place here at DU by the Ad company that DU uses. Mind you they use these ads so that they can keep DU available to everyone include those who might not be able to afford donations (or don't want to).

I know a few other oddities have appeared over the past 10 years and if you send something to the admins they can make a request to not show that ad on their site. They can't pick what they get but they can remove what is bad.

BTW this is how alot of advertisers end up on shows like Rush Limbaugh. They pay a lump sum to someone like Clear Channel to advertise on their variety of programs and ultimately some of those ads end up on Rush's show. I think it costs more to pick where you advertise; however, if you find out you're on a show you find offensive you can ask your ad to be removed.
