I will always believe that to some degree Hillary Clinton's "loss" in 2016 was due to just enough people in just enough places thinking that she had it in the bag and so decided that their vote simply wasn't needed.
I'm 65 years old and my first vote for president was in 1976 when I was 21. Ever since I was old enough to vote in 1973 the only year I didn't vote was in 1978 when I was going to grad school in Ohio and received my absentee ballot from Pennsylvania two days after the election.
As far as presidential elections go I've voted in some landslides, 10%+ margin (1980, 1984), some with comfortable margins of 4 to 9.9% (1988, 1992, 1996, 2004, 2008, 2012) and some close ones with under 4% margins (1976, 2000, 2016). The widest % margin in my life was LBJ's 61.1 vote in 1964. I would be fairly certain even LBJ would've said that he needed every single one of those votes.
We do NOT need a Democratic Tom Dewey in 2020 because Dolt45 desperately needs and deserves repudiation, and the only way that we can insure that it will happen is if WE get off of our crusty asses (and I have a BIG ass) and make it happen. This election will not be over until the votes are counted and, to paraphrase President Ford, our long national nightmare ends at Noon on 1/20/21.
My wife and I voted on 10/9. I'm taking our son up to cast his first vote tomorrow so we know that Biden/Harris will have at least 3 votes in Maine.
So, have you voted or do you have a plan to vote? If not, than please do. This election is just too damned important.
That's my 2 cents, and quite possibly over priced at that. Thank you for reading and please VOTE!

(31,109 posts)You are correct of course, people need to remember in every election the Democrat has to win by five points more than the Republican because that is the average amount of votes that are prevented stolen suppressed etc.
For any Democrat to win in any election they have to win considerably more

(4,845 posts)It is just the general disbelieve that Trump is anywhere near electable. It wasn't because of the polls. It was simply because of the joke of the idea of a Trump presidency. You can time travel back to 2015 and tell me you know Trump is going to win as a fact. And I would have laughed at your face and call you crazy.

(32,633 posts)... City of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. We did turn out for Hillary in 2016 but our numbers weren't high enough to overcome the racism and misogyny in other parts of PA.
We were sad to see that the black voters in Pittsburgh (for whatever reason) did not support Hillary in the same way they supported Obama in 2008 and 2012. It was disheartening, and it was enough to turn the state over to Chump. I'm not saying it was just the black voters, other groups were also to blame including white suburban women, etc.
As proud as I was to vote for Hillary Clinton, I'll never understand how those misguided people chose Chump over her. Some Dems stayed home and didn't vote at all, rather than vote for her. If only ... if only ... IF ONLY!

That said, polls are simply as snapshot in time and shouldn't be used as an excuse not to vote. I voted September 27th and dropped my ballot in an official drop box the next day.

(15,204 posts)...it wasnt complacency among anyone on DU! No one HERE who bothers to spend time on a political forum like this is going to sit out an election, not if they feel assured of victory, not if they feel doomed to failure, and not for anything in between.
Ill track the polls all I want to, thank you very much.

(54,770 posts)a number of DUers who voted for trump, left it blank, or went 3rd Party because they were ticked off their guy didn't get the nomination. Ever heard of the Jackpine Radicals?

(15,204 posts)And they're probably still voting Green or Libertarian or writing in Ralph Nader or their hamster this election.
I don't think they voted the way they did in 2016 out of complacency, because they read polls, or they didn't read polls. They were just being self-righteous assholes and "burn it all down!" fools.

(10,237 posts)I said nothing that would imply complacency on my part. the point of the post was to be a cautionary tale.

(16,369 posts)Thats pretty silly. Most thinking adults can look at polls, process them and then follow up and vote. They can also inform their friends and family of the state of the race, and why its important to vote.
Burying ones head in the sand can also be counterproductive.
An understanding of human nature and politics is a wonderful concept. You should try it sometime.

Posts like the OP are of little use here. For starters the people who visit DU every day are obviously people like myself that are very interested in politics and fired up to get Caligula out of the White House before he destroys our country. Does anyone seriously think that anybody here is going to become so complacent over a poll that they don't bother to vote? That because things are looking kind of good we are going to slack off doing everything in our individual power to see this through? Really?
I think any possibility of anyone not taking the threat of Trump seriously or thinking he had no chance to win went out the window back in 2016. Of course we need to stay vigilant. But I believe malignant pessimism hurts us worse than a little exuberant optimism. People who believe they can win stay involved and try to.

(3,383 posts)I filled it out. My mother did the same that night. The next day we went down the the county recorder's office to drop off our ballots. I have done this before and usually I am the only person there. This year, there was a steady stream of people coming and going to drop off their ballots too. In the 3 min I was there, I saw atleast 15-20 people.
The country recorder's office have come out and confirmed that our early voting is off the charts just like the rest of the country.

(10,237 posts)Or, possibly because you know your candidate will lose. For example, in 1984 I knew (as did the whole country) that Fritz Mondale had ZERO at best chance of winning that election but I made damn sure to get my ass to the booth...and I have a BIG ass...yikes).
Voting matters 100% of the time. Especially when the incumbent is such a piece of excrement with legs that he almost makes Dubya look like an elder statesman.
