Bully Beatdown

I saw a couple of previous threads on DU about this show. Just watched a couple of episodes.

This show is fucking awesome!

A bully is challenged to fight a professional MMA fighter, and there is $10K the bully could win.

A 5 minute grappling round, and for every tap out $1K goes from the bully to the victim.

Then a 5 minute kickboxing round, and if the bully is KOed, TKOed, or quits, the other $5K goes to the victim.

First episode I saw had Daniel Cormier as the MMA fighter. Not only did he beat the snot out of a bully, Daniel Cormier is a really nice guy. He's been to the Olympics twice, and he suffered a number of tragedies in his personal life. Father killed when he was 7 years old, and his daughter died in a car wreck at 3 months of age.

1. I haven't seen it, but it would kind of surprise me to see the kind of bully that really deserves

an ass whoopin' get in the ring like that. They tend to be cowards if faced with anything like a worthy opponent, not to mention a trained fighter. Are you sure it's not more reality show staging?

3. That is one criticism I've read

It is a Mark Burnett production, so that does raise the prospect of staging. The fighters are real MMA fighters and it does have a lot of reality TV hype. One could say the same about UFC fights having theater in them, but having done a little martial arts myself I think the Bully Beatdown fights are pretty close to real. The MMA fighters are mostly just toying with the bullies and could hurt them a LOT worse if they so desired.

Season 3 is on MTV, if you want to see it for yourself.

2. The whole concept is disgusting!

I was bullied my two years in Jr High (8-9th grades). My jaw was broken in school and the bullying accelerated, with no support from the administration. The excuse was, Boys will be boys.

My parents went to school nearly weekly to put a stop to it. Nothing ever happened. I suffered for two years under this, being pummeled nearly every day in front of teachers who didn't care, and a vice principal who thought it was normal behavior for males.

Somehow, I got through it. But, god damnit, bullying is rampant in schools. I know. I was a high school math teacher before I retired. I've seen that it just doesn't stop.

Unless the school district puts in place a no tolerance policy! This involves training staff and teachers on handling the problem. It involves educating the students that since bullying is not tolerated, that it is always safe to report it.

As one who suffered not only having his jaws wired shut for six weeks during ninth grade, but being beat up every day while I had to endure it, all while the administration turned their heads, I owe it to post this here and ask DUers to advocate for no tolerance for bullying.

I came out okay, graduated university with honors in physics and mathematics. But so many end up taking their own lives.

Thanks for this post. It is important.

On edit: During my teaching career, I tolerated no bullying and reported all incidents to the counseling staff. My classroom was a safe haven. I never had to say it. Somehow the students always knew it. When I was on hall patrol, they knew it, too.

The solution is simple. No tolerance. And I really never had to overtly say it. When that policy is in order, the students just know it.

5. I recently reported a verbal bullying incident at work

There was no physical bullying, just verbal bullying. I completely agree that it is rampant in our society, particularly in schools, but I think it also happens in the workplace.

I endured physical and verbal bullying in Junior High, so I think my awareness for it is much higher than in the average person. My tolerance for it is zero.

My wife didn't endure much of it in school, so she does seem almost oblivious to the reality of it.

I think those who bully and get away with it go on to do it as adults, so I can see how they would think they are "bad as all that".

I also know people who view martial arts as sport and not fighting, so I can see how a bully could walk into the ring with an MMA fighter thinking, "I got this, and that $10K is mine."

I saw one where the bully was SO awful that the host picked him for himself.

But it's hard for me to take anything from MTV seriously. The same station that breeds shows like My Super Sweet 16 and Jersey Shore.
