A Venezuelan vessel carrying 1.3 million barrels of oil is tilting and it could lead to a catastrophic oil spill
BY SOPHIE LEWIS
OCTOBER 22, 2020 / 7:24 AM / CBS NEWS
A Venezuelan oil tanker has been parked for nearly two years in the Gulf of Paria, carrying approximately 80 million gallons of oil. New photos of the vessel show it appearing to tilt heavily on its side leading to growing concerns of a potential environmental disaster that threatens one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world.
According to local politicians and activist groups, the Nabarima is carrying about 1.3 million barrels of crude oil about five times the amount the Exxon Valdez famously spilled in 1989. The vessel is part of a joint venture between Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) and Italy's Eni SpA

his argument about transitioning away from oil - that he didn't explain well in the debate, that is being misconstrued by the media.

if over a million barrels can go on a ship?? That doesnt sound logical to me, but I suppose its possible.

(61,595 posts)5. A barrel is 42 gallons. The biggest supertankers can carry 3 million barrels.
The Exxon Valdez was comparable in total capacity (1.2m bbl), but it only spilled a quarter of its cargo.
I googled earlier and saw photos. Damn, those ships are enormous. I lived 15 years on a boat but it was a 46 footer.

I read a lot about WWII, many tankers were torpedoed. Back then they were in the tens of thousands not a million+.

"Eni is ready to perform activities to ensure the safe offloading of the Nabarima FSO offshore Venezuela, using state-of-the-art solutions," a spokesperson for Eni told CBS News. "The company will be able to proceed only after approval of its plan by PDVSA (majority shareholder and operator in Petrosucre) and upon formal assurance by the competent U.S. authorities that the mentioned activities bring no sanctions risk either for Eni and its contractors."
