(17,646 posts)I find it highly unlikely that they will not cheat if they have any way to do it and I fully expect them to push every lever they can to the maximum. And the outcomes of those multi channel attacks are unknowable to us. Thats why we all need to read that book from Gene Sharp and get ready. Its only 104 pages long.

(10,167 posts)Or, you know. I'm going to be 72 in two weeks and that's what I think when I see lines like this.
We have to make it so this is the last time we see good people, U.S. citizens, being tortured and abused this way, standing forever, no bathrooms, etc. just to exercise their right to vote.
Bravo to these and other tough, brave, warriors all over the country for doing this. An especial shout out to my friends and relatives in Milwaukee who are doing the same no matter what the weather!

(41 posts)In Oregon we vote by mail. Sat at the table with a cup of coffee and the voter pamphlet so I could read about the down ballot candidates and the propositions (Magic mushrooms are on the ballot!). Even took a bathroom break with no nervous wondering where I might find one. I took it to a drop box just to be sure. This is the way to do it!

(906 posts)I have other ideas that may or not work.
Such as carbon type ballots you keep a copy turn in the other. They all are stamped with a. Random number so that if you ever want tp prove youre vote wasnt changed youd bring in your copy and check. Election officials could do same they would pull random voters names ( names because the random number is not attached to any voters name.) those voters ballots could be verified that no changes have been made)
Since sometimes I hear that votes could have been changed usually someone says it looked like the machine changed their vote but paper ballots this is a little harder unless someone crosses out your vote and puts a different one in )
Anyhow Im rambling
But I think your idea is wonderful
KS Toronado
(17,199 posts)How about the original goes in one pile and the copy goes in another pile, then separate teams tally up the
numbers of the pile they receive and when finished both piles must agree or they switch piles and get to
count again. Each team comprised of equal D's & R's.

(2,023 posts)wouldn't it be nice if people also gave them folding lawn chairs to sit on in line? Or is the line moving a bit too quickly for that ? Hmm . . . just realizedDoh!they can't put out lawn chairs because they don't want people playing Covid musical chairs! But if they could give sanitized, lightweight chairs to people who wanted them when they first get in line to vote, and instruct them to turn their chair in once they got to the building so that the chairs could be resanitized . . . that might work.

(7,627 posts)Is this just an example of great voter enthusiasm or an attempt at voter suppression?
greenjar_01
(6,477 posts)This is a volume issue. It's also the first time New York has allowed early voting in a Presidential election.
But most of all, this is voter enthusiasm. Nobody waits in lines like this to vote for the incumbent. This is rage voting from folks who are sick of the incumbent. In any case, I'd bet that precinct went 90-10 against Trump in 2016, if not worse. These lines have the Trump people clutching their blankies and updating their LinkedIn profiles.

(471 posts)Exactly what you said. Turnout is high given motivation to vote, distrust of mail in shenanigans, as a precaution in case Nov 3 is worse. The smart ones had filled out their absentee ballots and dropped them off at early voting. No regrets tho. One does what one must.

one in downtown Manhattan.
People waited 3 hours and more, downtown, and line at one point wound around 10 blocks. I was starting to do a slow burn though that it's so damn hard to vote. People had to leave for for work or childcare.
We needed 10 times the number of polling places. That should be in place.
But it was very heartening. After I got my sticker I kept walking all through telling people to not give up and that it felt great to get the I Voted Early Sticker.

(1,285 posts)1 1/2 hours to vote this morning in the Capital District. I got there exactly when polls opened. I have never waited on line before and Ive been voting for 46 years.
The actual voting bit (signing in, getting, getting ballot, marking ballot and putting it in machine took all of two minutes.) We dont have long complicated ballots with tons of propositions/ initiatives to vote on in NY taking up time.
The line moved fast because the voting bit goes so quickly here.
People were very happy while waiting. I live in a overwhelmingly D county and I expect most in line were voting straight D.
Everyone wore a mask - but everyone where I live always wear masks.

(10,495 posts)American exceptionalism leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to our Democracy right now! Republicans used to call Democrats un-American. I think it is time to call out their voter suppression as un-American. When we sweep them this time we need to fix this and pass criminal penalties for this behavior.

(4,552 posts)Specifically St Lawrence County along the Canadian border Northern NY.
Our county is 2821 square miles in size. Population per 2010 census was 111,944.
The County Seat is Canton NY. And that is the only location I am aware of for our Early Voting option for St Lawrence County residents. Not sure if it is the same for everyone or not.
From my home at the Eastern edge of the County, I am 25 miles away. It takes me about 40 minutes to get there.
When I arrived at 10:45 AM, the wait was 1 and a half hours. I left at 12:25 PM so it was about 1 hour and 40 minutes. I overheard (therefore unverified) that people were there as early as 7AM. Voting did not start until 9AM.
Very well managed, temp in the mid 40s so chilly, gray but dry. Took awhile to get to the inside area but then it was just more waiting and keeping relaxed, patient and 6 feet from other voters.
Normally, in my local little town polling site I am in and out in 5 minutes.
This was a long time, but I wanted to get it done, in person, early, just in case.
My ballot was misreading so I had to have another ballot printed, but that 2nd one went thru fine.
Whew!!!!
Raftergirl
(1,285 posts)to decide how many early polling sites to have. My H wrote the bill as part of the budget process. There were issues with upstate R legislators not wanting it at all - so the compromise was letting counties decide how many early voting sites to have but a minimum of at least 1. Some of those counties also never requested the available funds in the bill they were entitled too. Another compromise was allowing the counties to decide where to put the polling sites.
Rensselaer County, for example, put all their sites in the city of Troy. None are in there suburbs or rural areas of the county.
My county (Albany) has them spread throughout the county.
Karma13612
(4,552 posts)Without a doubt, we need to standardize some of the voting options and rules both at state level and federal level for Federal elections.
Much as with healthcare in this country, it is way too patch work.
Impossible to follow/ easy to manipulate for nefarious purposes / and down right suppressive.
Thats tragic for Rensselaer County.
Raftergirl
(1,285 posts)plus, NYC legislators wanted all the money for early voting to go to them, so they didnt push the requirement to have same amount of polling sites - as the fewer upstate counties had the more money downstate counties would get.
Every issue in NYS has an upstate/downstate component to it.
I believe every county had to have at least one early voting poll site. Zero was not an option.
demmiblue
(36,841 posts)I think the longest I have ever waited, here in Michigan, was in 2008. I think it was probably about 30 minutes, or so... no early voting, and no excuse free mail-in voting (though that has changed). I don't recollect ever waiting during the primaries.

(1,285 posts)Ive never waited on line before to vote in 44 years.
A lot of people just wanted to get out an vote this year and just didnt want to wait at all.
My early voting site is smack dab in the middle of my suburb which is 97% white - as are most of the surrounding communities who would go to this site to early vote.. I waited 1 1/2 hours.
The voting bit was quick. Took about 2 minutes, so the line actually moved very quickly.
We dont have propositions/initiatives cluttering up our ballots.
On mine I only had President/VP; Congressperson, State Assemblyperson, State Senator and County DA.
So I filled in five bubbles and was done.
I live in a strong D county and Im sure almost all in line this morning were voting D.

We don't have in person, polling place early voting here in PA, but you can go to your local election bureau or satellite office, apply for an absentee ballot, get it, fill it out, put it in the envelopes and hand it in at the same time. Lots of people are doing that instead of mailing or voting on Nov 3rd.
