We have elevated the Vice of Greed to a Virtue....

While resources were cheap and plentiful, and while the environment was able to absorb the byproducts of progress (read pollution), Greed was best served by widespread consumption and so the idiocy of worshiping Greed was widely accepted.

But now that resources are becoming scarce and expensive, the true face of Greed is becoming apparent: only those with economic and political power are maintaining and growing their wealth. To do this, they are harvesting the wealth of economic classes starting with those least able to defend themselves and moving up the ladder. The result will be slow economic collapse that will weaken the next class up the ladder and make them "harvestable".

The antonym of Greed is Socialism. The "Freedom" to exploit those beneath you on the economic ladder should never be absolute.
