IMO:
There is a large chunk of Trump supporters who are Christian, single issue voters.
They are perceiving that, after decades of longing and fighting for a rock-ribbed conservative USSC, they finally achieved their dream and their glory with tonights Barrett confirmation.
And now as they run their victory laps, they will find NO REASON to vote for Trump. They only put up with him so he would pave the way for packing the courts. As far as theyre concerned, they already got from Trump what they wanted. Now theyll have to decide whether they want to spend hours voting in a meaningless election or doing their laundry.
McConnell should have held off on the confirmation until mid-November. Yeah, there would have been downsides for that maneuver, but not something that, in all likelihood, could contribute to the disintegration of the GOP. The Barrett confirmation will widen the Biden lead and decimate the Republican Party.
TheRealNorth
(9,478 posts)that is reason enough for them to vote for Trump.

(9,998 posts)The Court now has a 6-3 tilt. The ONLY way the Democrats have to get a fair shake for the next couple of decades, will be by adding Justices, and that is by no means a sure thing.
The repubs will now have a means to stop ANY Biden program they want, even though they don't have the Senate or the House.

(6,137 posts)SC is more powerful than congress and presidency as it has the final say in all matters but military. Extreme SC can overturn every legislation and EO that dems pass. Even if GOP loses big this election, theyve actually won for a long time. Even if thomas retires and gets replaced by dems, SC would still remain very conservative for decades.

(14,854 posts)He got the majority of the Christians' votes in 2016. He may have lost a few percentage points with them since then, but I think there's a very good chance the majority of Christians will vote for him again.
You believe Trump's Christian voters "put up with him" but it is not so. Many of them have made loyalty to Trump into a tenet of their Christian faith. They adore him, and they would enthusiastically support installing him as dictator for life.
Eyeball_Kid
(7,430 posts)it wont take much to cause a landslide. Think of the 1% difference in WI, PA, and MI in 2016. Only a percentage of evangelicals or conservative Court enthusiasts who have dirty laundry to wash on 11/3 are needed to do it.
Elections are won at the margins. In the same way, a victory can morph into a landslide.

Yes, I fear for the overturn of Roe, but they probably will just chip away at it. They've got to keep the rubes voting for them. Same with same-sex marriage. They can't lose their victim status!

I've often thought that hypothetically it the Democratic party gave up on the abortion and guns issues, the republican party would have no reason to exist. Now, I'm not saying they should, but it speaks to the fact that the rebublicans will be losing a huge reason for their base to vote for them.

(501 posts)I find Barrett is a disgrace to her own family. I don't think she thought of the ramifications that her family will endure. It doesn't matter to her that that the majority of the US is opposed her appointment. I don't think she is a good mother. (3,635 posts)as evidenced by the fact that Dems have won the popular vote in 6 of the past 7 presidential elections (and in a few days it likely will be 7 of 8) - and a hard right court will not be compatible with the views of the people. Women's rights, civil rights, workers' rights, voting rights, the environment, healthcare, science etc - are all in jeopardy.
The Repubs are a right-wing, rural party that retains power via minoritarian mechanisms, ie voter suppression, the Electoral College, the Senate, USSC, gerrymandering, etc.

(90,645 posts)Presidents come and go, but the Supreme Court is forever. Presidents come and go, but lifetime appointments to federal judgeships are not only forever, but they are the literal pipeline to SCOTUS appointments.
Mitch McConnell held up as many federal vacancies as he could during Obamas 8 years, then began to fill them as fast as possible once Trump was in. Moscow Mitch has managed to get two hundred (200) lifetime appointments filled.
This is McConnells legacy: not Trump or any other president, but swing the SCOTUS and lower courts hard right. Very hard right.

(25,183 posts)They will want Trump being the one to nominate any future SCOTUS Justices over the next four years. It is possible that Thomas may want to retire as he is now 72, and Stephen Breyer is 82, while he would clearly not retire in the next four years of a second Trump term, things happen when we're in our eighties.
They'll want Trump to serve at least two years of a second term, so that their real choice, Pence, could run for election in both 2024 and 2028.
The only election fallout among the GOP over the timing of this confirmation vote may well be that Collins doesn't get re-elected. Some Maine GOP'ers will probably think that six years of a Democratic Senator is worth getting a Republican candidate in 2026 who is more reliably right wing.
