General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWow, three state trying to legalize pot for general use! But I bet none of them pass!
Colorado, Oregon and Washington have amendments on the ballot.
They seem to be polling well but so was CA and it still lost by 5 points.
Any residents of these three states have any more information? Feeling positive?

(13,184 posts)The only state where it has lost is South Dakota.
Initiatives won in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington.
A medical marijuana initiative will win in Massachusetts on November 6.
It could happen in Arkansas, too.

(13,184 posts)In Washington and Colorado:
--The campaigns have 10 point leads in the polls. In Washington, they're at 57%, in Colorado at 49%.
--The campaigns have lots and lots of money. $2 million in Colorado, $3 million in Washington.
--The campaigns have carefully crafted, moderate, tax and regulate initiatives.
--The campaigns have broad lists of endorsers, including many mainstream figures.
--There is very little sign of any organized opposition.
In Oregon:
--The campaign is trailing in the polls, 41% to 37%, but still very close.
--The campaign is broke, hasn't managed to garner big funder support.
--The campaign is being hammered by suspiciously timed newspaper exposes about pot trafficking under the medical program.
The best shot looks like Washington, but Colorado could well win, too. Oregon now is a longshot.

(13,184 posts)Prop 19 in California in 2010 led in the polls up until just about this point in the election cycle.
Some differences this time:
--This is a presidential election year. Enthusiams for Obama should bring lots of pro-marijuana voters to the polls, even though Obama's position in indistinguishable from Romney's on the issue.
--Prop 19 was broke at the end. Richard Lee shot his $1 million wad getting the signatures gathered, and the campaign couldn't raise enough money to effectively advertise in the nation's largest media market. As I noted above, the Washington and Colorado campaigns are flush with cash. In swing state Colorado, where the air waves are filled with political ads, organizers did an $800,000 ad buy months ago, when rates were cheap. In Washington, they've already done one TV ad campaign and bumped upward in the polls after that. There will be plenty of money for October ad blitzes by both campaigns.
--And we're two years further down the road. Support for marijuana legalization has only increased. It's now at 50% nationwide according to the latest Gallup poll, and around 58% in the West. We're riding a wave. Yeehaw, surf's up!
Would be awesome if they passed to start chipping away at the monstrous WOD propaganda.

(58,634 posts)they raise public awareness and get publicity. I know it's the long slow, road, but eventually this will be fixed. The War on Drugs has been one of the worst things the American government has perpetrated in its history.
The American people are tired of it.

(8,020 posts)I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHY TOBACCO IS LEGAL AND MARIJUANA IS NOT!!!!!!!! I'm not a big user of MJ - have tried it, did inhale, don't much like being high, but I sure as hell can see ANY reason why it is illegal! As far as I'm concerned, tobacco SHOULD be illegal, but it never will be. Alas. Ms Bigmack

(1,016 posts)Same thing with Oklahoma and prohibition. The state was the last state to reinstate alcohol, the moon shiners kept voting not to legalize alcohol.
