and voted in their best interests instead of believing the shit that burbles from the mouths of the Right wing, the GOP would be done as a party. But sadly, they continue to believe the safety nets that keep them human are gifts from the GOP and not of 'the enemy the Liburals'. Of the poorest states, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Louisiana, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, and North Carolina, ONLY North Carolina voted for President Obama in 2008. The Red color proves it for the rest of the Republican-voting population, Dumbfuckistan,
a country within a country. The now industrialized Southern part of the US. Where the wages are low and so are the IQs. More people graduate from college in the Northeast than in the South by a huge margin.

Republicans have kept their populations basically poor and ignorant for nearly three generations since the beginnings of the civil rights movement. And those populations continue to vote for them in large numbers.
May their gods help them.

(795 posts)When you learn the answer, you will have a better understanding of what has been happening across this country for decades. The Democratic party had treated the red states like the 47%. They haven't been seen worth the time, or money.

(8,339 posts)The Democratic party is SAVING the red states. Red states are welfare states. They get back more from the federal government than they put in. You're conflating repuke attitudes with democrats. And it's not working.

(25,699 posts)It's just that some places embrace stupidity as a point of cultural value. And if you want to whine about that, go right ahead. Though I don't live there anymore, I was born and raised in Alabama and spent a good deal of time in North Carolina and Georgia.
There are smart southerners, no doubt. But the overall culture embraces ignorance as a virtue. Tell me, do you see more pro-slavery window decals in Mississippi, or equally-red Idaho? I think there's a notable aspect of cultural difference there.

(60,212 posts)I'm confused! How is there a war on women?
Comments about this so-called war on women are petty and stupid. Something else the Democratic Party can dream up to take away from this president's poor record. Shift the focus to those who are young, apparently stupid and easy to influence. I have no problem with birth-control choices or sex changes as long as those wanting them pay for them. If George wants to become Georgiana, so be it! Let his parents help with the cost, not the taxpayer.
In this country, women can pursue any vocation they choose. They drive, vote, and can even carry concealed weapons with permits. Where is the war on women? Birth control does not cost $3,000 a year and the taxpayer should not have to pay for it. Period!
Politicians should stay out of our personal lives. We own these bodies. Don't tell us what we can do with them or what we should do with them. Let the men have the babies, nurse them, take them to day care, pick them up, go home, make dinner for the family, etc. On and on! When we have children, our family owns our lives if we take the responsibility for them. No going out after work for a beer, no, no. Got to pick kids up, and start the second half of our job. I've done this. It's over for me and I can honestly look back and wonder how I did it. Day by day! That's how. I have no regrets.
War on women? A bunch of bull! It's actually the death of our liberties we have had for all these years. From a free-spirited bunch of liberals, thinking they know it all. If they want to make these changes, do it for yourselves. If they don't want God on our money, well, most of us do, deal with it. Get a life. Quit trying to change what is right and free. If they want socialism, move! We don't.

(10,942 posts)It has pretty much evolved from a farming culture to a banking, hi-tech economy. I have done business in North Carolina, believe me, traffic jams there are huge and the roads are modern and big. I have seldom seen farmer types in those traffic jams, most of the people are in business casual or business dress. The change in the composition of the North Carolina economy explains why that state is trending toward blue, just like Virginia started several years back. My argument is that North Carolina will continue to trend toward blue and ultimately be followed by Kentucky, Texas and Georgia. The worst thing that can happen for republicans is for people to become better educated and wealthier.

(17,111 posts)There are areas, usually around cities, that are industrialized. However, you can drive through these states and go though area after area with no industry or a reliance on one industry.
The textile mills have been decimated because the jobs went overseas. Bain did a number on a steel mill in SC. The farming sector is being diminished in many areas.
To even to companies to consider the South, states have to offer massive tax breaks and other incentives.
Check the median family income. It mirrors the graph you posted. The money here for great change is nil. The Republicans effectively scare people about the jobs they have. Even when the Dems were in charge, there was no great uptick. People saw little sign of help, and they still don't.
Even with that, a lot of these states have sizable minorities and the tipping point gets closer. There are whites who join with them to try to change things.
Your generalizations show a great lack of understanding of the entire region. You pick certain features and make broad pronouncements based on that. In addition, there were quite a few western states below the mean. What about them?
So you are the President of your own version of 'Dumbfuckistan' as you so elegantly put it. Your ignorance of and bigotry towards an entire region is appalling. There are people working here for change, but every pronouncement like yours makes it harder. That just builds resentment and more of a tendency to tune all outside voices out.

Have a nice day.
Are_grits_groceries
(17,111 posts)The auto industry has been one of the few flocking anywhere. They only reach a small portion of the populace.
If you know history, you know that before WWII that textile workers across the South walked out and then tried to unionize. The authorities responded by declaring martial law and took other harsh measures. In Honea Path SC, strikers were shot dead. There was violence all across the region.
The workers got little national help. There were talks and recommendations made which the owners ignored. Most of the workers were not rehired. This was in the Great Depression. Most people know who Joe Hill is but have no clue about 'John Mill.'
That left a lot of bitterness across the South, and it was not aimed at just the owners. The workers realized that they were on their on in that part of the country. That is one reason it is hard to unionize. Memories are long.

(24,761 posts)That's how come so many working-class white voters in the South vote repuke. They've been bombarded by the relentless, endless barrage of right-wing hate radio and television being shoved down their throats.
People in general have been conditioned from early childhood to believe that what they see on TV, hear on the radio, and/or read in the newspapers has to be true or else they wouldn't be allowed to publish or broadcast it. Because of the relatively low level of education (compared to college grads), they're more likely to fall for the big lies of right-wing media--which occurs in listening areas which do not offer alternatives to the bile spewing from their surroundings. Question is, how do we counteract such a climate of hatred and ignorance when the public is being kept ignorant?

Too bad we don't have one of those.
When elections are about cultural identity, some southern whites might not see any reason to vote for the liberals. George Bush looks better in a cowboy hat.
It's the Democrats' fault for not providing a real choice on the economic issues.
We need more class warfare to make inroads with working class voters who are on the other side of the cultural divide. Calling them inbreds and that stuff is hugely insulting and bigoted.
