I realized I haven't heard anything about Bill Clinton all year. Kind of weird in a major presidential election. Where's he at?

(34,857 posts)Especially in the #MeToo era when the Democrats are going after Trump's character - parading around Bill Clinton, who has been linked to Epstein just like Trump, is not the look we need at this point. Plus, his coalition, unfortunately for him, is dead. The voters he used to bring to the table are likely already solidly Democratic, and therefore easily persuadable by guys like Obama, Warren and Bernie, or they've long gone GOP and aren't ever coming back.

(3,486 posts)I think it's wise, given what happened in 2016, for them to stay away.

(34,857 posts)He's the one guy whose favorability numbers post-presidency actually have slipped as opposed to improved like with Carter and Bush.

(3,486 posts)However, I think his achievements are lasting. He seems very well thought of internationally. When we travel and U.S. politics are discussed, Clinton invariably gets a thumbs-up. Brilliant, charming and interested in everything. Someone told me that Bill always buys the first round when he's out. His statue is still up in Ireland, re the Dayton Peace Accords, so far as I know.

(34,857 posts)Bill will probably be seen in better light for future generations. But he's too close to his scandals and the cloud of sexual harassment/seedy connections, for it to be realized. In 20+ years, I suspect we'll think differently of him.
It's weird. Much like his presidency, his post-presidency has been filled with major ups and downs. When he left the White House, he was dinged pretty hard for the pardons and the rumors that his staff destroyed furniture on their way out (I think the only major thing they actually did do was steal the W keys off the keyboards, which is kinda funny). But he bounced back around 2004, when he had his open heart surgery, and really looked like the party's elder statesman again, especially when he and H.W. Bush worked together on the tsunami relief and then Katrina...until 2008 tainted his legacy a bit during the primaries with Obama and people questioned a lot of his comments that felt kind of borderline racist. Then in 2012, he was probably at the height of his post-presidency. He was such a valuable asset to Obama's reelection. He gave a barn burner of a speech at the DNC and worked his tail off to get him reelected.
It's been all down hill since. I feel bad for him.

(3,486 posts)Clinton's economy was the first time in my adult life I really felt like I was getting ahead. I'll always be grateful for that.
But you're right, things change. The tides may turn again. He's only in his 70s.
In the meantime, it's good he's staying away. Good pol that he is, I'm sure he understands.
btw, I had heard Hillary's handlers blew off his advice in 2016. ("Go to Wisconsin," he said.) One of the best political minds of his generation, but they knew better.

(3,486 posts)I can't imagine he'd be up to campaigning.
Also, Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush have been MIA.

(3,486 posts)He looks frail to me. But then, I remember the Clinton who loved Big Macs and was always a little chubby, so there's that.

(3,486 posts)"Not on the campaign trail" would have been a better choice. He certainly has valid reasons, as you pointed out.
