Last time Lizette Teniente went to the eye doctor was four years ago. "Well we don't have the money to go to the doctor and get my vision checked," Teniente said.

Her case is common in our area. Right here in the Metroplex there are just under a million people who are uninsured.

"The people we're seeing today are hard-working Americans,” Dr. Bobby Kapur, a professor with the Baylor College of Medicine said. “These are people who have two part-time jobs or they have hourly wages or simply they don't have jobs that allow them to get health insurance." ...

health "screening". Chronic illnesses that get uncovered simply make them uninsurable (unless Obama wins in which case they are only uninsurable for 18 months or so). And there is that little matter of what it costs to do ongoing management of those chronic conditions.

You know, like hypertension and diabetes and cancer and such..........

And at good prices relative to the overall market - but still no subsidies so out of many people's range.

Still, if I was diagnosed with cancer tomorrow, here in Texas, I could get coverage at about 300ish per/mo for a 49 y/o male.

(special pre-existing condition policy) would be over $500/mo. Trust me, those people can't swing it. Neither can I. And I don't even HAVE a pre-existing condition - I'm perfectly healthy and fit. I just can't get anybody to process my regular policy application because it's been years since I've seen a doctor and I guess they think I must have several major conditions I'm lying about.
