General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat are we going to do if the site goes down tomorrow? What's the plan?
Is it posted somewhere?
We should at least have a forum on Reddit to all get together IMHO.
If you think we went crazy in 2016 when we lost DU on election day, holy F*** a lot of us would lose our sanity ENTIRELY if we didn't have a place to talk to each other.
Do we have a plan?

(33,643 posts)There's no reason to NOT have a plan.
There's other places we could meet and have a similar experience in the meanwhile.

(33,643 posts)Looking at the first 3, I'm seeing a whole lot of 'it's not going to happen' and no actual alternative plan for how/where we're going to meet up.
I hope you guys are right ...

(67,792 posts)This site moves very fast. It is absolutely possible one could be on DU a lot and never see those threads. Collectively, they had 85 replies. That is not a lot.
Right now is a fraught time. People are NERVOUS. We're supposed to be a community. Communities support each other. To chastise someone for asking THAT particular question is the opposite of supportive.
How about you let it slide, hmmm?

(51,308 posts)Why? Does it make you feel good in some way?

(146,287 posts)DU has a Facebook group and a Twitter account. You can check those if it goes down. However, don't expect a DU administrator to respond to your posts at either place. The site administrators will be trying to fix the issue and get the site back up.
Typically, what happens on those alternate sites is that people swarm them and ask what's going on and why is the site down? There is no answer, because nobody knows why and the administrators are busy. So, no useful information appears for some time. Just panicky posts that answer no questions at all. When an administrator has time, he will post something on both sites to give a progress report. You can watch for such posts.
But, you can also go watch election coverage on your TV. That's what I will do if DU goes down tomorrow.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Not just get news on when it will be fixed.
And there's no 'cable' hooked to my TV.
MineralMan
(146,287 posts)DU is on both places, as I said. It's not DU, though, and the discussions don't look the same at all.

(68,555 posts)be vigilant if you see rapid postings or some threat. MIRT is listed in announcements ...send a PM if you see something...otherwise. I think we will be OK.

(22,034 posts)Trump's election was chief among them.
It was also distressing that DU was hacked. I missed our camaraderie during such dark days.
Regardless, I went to other websites for news and information. After all, this is the internet!
As MineralMan mentioned above, turn on your TV.

(11,631 posts)Called it DUbunker just in case. I don't really wanna be in charge of it at all. Its open to the public so could also devolve into a shitshow. Not planning to use it except in emergency because I don't want to detract from this place in any way.

(90,646 posts)...would pin up a notice by now advising us of plans, as the clock is ticking. Generally, certain things are temporarily turned off at the site in anticipation of very heavy traffic. The thing about Star membership is just gossip at this point.

(34,136 posts)I need one to lull me to sleep! The time change helps a little - last night I went to bed at 1 AM instead of my usual 2 AM! Problem is, the guy was here at 8 AM to finish the concrete treatment on the porches and walkway. I'm tired of getting work done on and around the house - and now that almost everything is finished, unpacking and putting everything away. I need a week off!

I did join your group, but if DU goes down, I'll probably hang out at the other one.
r/politics seems good too. It's not limited to liberals, but seems to be heavily dominated by them. I'm guessing the rules aren't too amenable to trollish asshole cons. https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/

(33,328 posts)I resemble that guy!
Except my hair hasn't been that long in 50 years.
And I don't have a tattoo.
And I can't dance. (And people suddenly need to go somewhere else if I sing).
And I probably weigh about the same as one of his arms.
And I have a redneck tan -- hands, face and neck are brown, the rest is fishbelly.
But other than that, we're twin brothers!
BTW, if DU goes down, I have faith that it will be brought back quickly.

(37,748 posts)After I vote, I'll come home, have dinner and watch a movie or two and tune out completely. Wed. morning is when I'll hear the first few bits about what goes down on Tues.
That said, I'd bet a ten dollar bill that admins are as prepared as they can be. I hear there's a Facebook group for DU... so there's one option.
