But in one of the most widely anticipated elections in U.S. history, eyes were squarely on a string of key battleground states, including Michigan, where, as of 12:50 a.m., Trump led 54%-44% with about 59% the expected vote total counted and thousands of votes from Detroit yet to be tallied. And with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson predicting turnout would likely top 5.26 million the most in state history it means the still-untallied votes could result in a huge swing, especially with the majority of the 3.26 million absentee votes cast in the state expected to be more favorable to Biden.

But Biden was projected to win Minnesota, a state Trump hoped to turn, and with 75% of the vote in, Biden was ahead 53%-46% in Arizona, a state Trump won four years ago. And while Trump held leads in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, they were in the same place as Michigan with large numbers of absentee ballots, expected to be more generally favorable to Biden, yet to be counted.
