(115,596 posts)When you show up to vote the election judge crosses your name off their list. So if I try to vote under someone else's name, if that person has already voted I'll be busted because they will have already been checked off. If they haven't voted yet and the person I claimed to be shows up later to vote and presents proof of his/her identity, they can submit a provisional ballot. As far as I know this sort of scenario has never happened, at least in my state, because it's too difficult to pull off, and people would have to be doing it in great numbers to make any difference.
