Centrist Democrats talk leadership changes after negative election results

Centrist Democrats talk leadership changes after negative election results
By Scott Wong and Mike Lillis - 11/04/20 01:50 PM EST

Stung by their party’s dispiriting showing at the polls Tuesday, two moderate House Democrats say they and other centrists are privately discussing a plan that was unthinkable just 24 hours earlier: throwing their support behind a challenger to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

The two Democrats told The Hill on Wednesday that they were reaching out to their colleagues about backing one of Pelosi’s top lieutenants, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), for Speaker in the next Congress.

“He’s the only one prepared and positioned” to be Speaker, said one of the Democratic lawmakers. “He bridges moderates and progressives better than anyone. And most importantly, he’s not Nancy Pelosi.”

The idea was immediately shot down by Jeffries, who says he's focused on keeping his current spot. Yet the grumbling reflects a remarkable shift in internal Democratic thinking in the immediate wake of Tuesday’s elections.

If people want to have a conversation about Pelosi, Fine. But I think Schumer deserves plenty of scrutiny as well.

young, articulate, inspiring former NFL player who has transformed a Dallas/Dallas suburban district that had voted Republican for generations-winning his 2nd term

We do have to groom more young Democratic leaders

Speaker is two heartbeats from the Presidency.

Nancy Pelosi has more than proven her competency for the role she's in and should, IMO, continue.

I get a little crazy when people criticize Nancy P.

In my book, she deserves as much admiration as RGB, and I, for one, have that for her....

There was opposition in 2018 but she said nobody was ready to step in so she viewed her term as possibly transitional.

We are long overdue for new blood at the top our party. Obama was new blood and look what happened.

Pelosi is 80 years old and has been our leader in the House for well over a decade. There's no shame in letting someone else step up.

We can't be the party of youth and change if our leadership are all octagenarians.
