Last night I sulked off to bed at 10:30 CST angry and worried. My first thought, "Tonight I've become a sad, old bitter man." My restless mind drifted to the Enlightenment and its influence on our Founders, how reason and science and high-mindedness prevailed, and how our country was birthed within the embrace of an intellectual genesis...and how so very far we have departed from that original impulse. We have.
At some point I dreamt that the Cheeto Bandito was running again...as soon as he left office, with designs on a second term in 2024.
Preposterous? Or are the narcissistic egomaniac so driven by redeeming his "brand" and his cult so deluded as to try this?
Please--help me purge this nightmarish demon! Convince me this won't happen. PLEASE!

(7,947 posts)And I suspect that the GOP will do some consolidating and not allow 17 candidates.
But... I think by that time maybe the feverish Trumpers will have burned themselves up.

(1,207 posts)Who puts him on a strict vegan diet. He sees Dr's to get his arteries unclogged.
His lawyers manage to keep him out of prison.
Yeah, I could see him running in 2024 under those circumstances.....sure.

To be perfectly honest I would be surprised if Joe chooses to run again at 82. We will see!

(32,754 posts)I suppose his cult base would give, but as we know it takes a lot more than what they have.
We will from now on have to be ever vigilant against this kind of repeat

Besides, Trump may try to run again, but he'll be 78 and all his financial debts will have caught up with him. And he'll be "old news."

(15,379 posts)America being America and how it treats the rich or even... the "rich," Trump could escape justice. Then he could immediately refile to run again in 2024, and now we have three scenarios. Is his ego bigger than his love of money, and is he serious about running again? Is the opposite true, and he's doing it as a grift? Or is it a crazy combination where he gives the money to Invanka to run setting up what he hopes is a political dynasty that soothes his ego and will protect him from whatever legal trouble he decides to get into next?

(9,988 posts)His power base in vaguely mainstream politics will be gone. Nobody will bet real money on him.
I imagine his future will be one of playing to an ever-dwindling cult base. He'll probably do "rallies" on the redneck circuit for a few years, maybe have a TV show or a YouTube channel where he just spews word-salad bile and endlessly bitch about how unfairly he was treated. Might be able to get a small crowd at a state fair chanting "Lock her up" for old times' sake, like some one-hit wonder from the 70s playing their only good song three times in one set. Until his bad health and oncoming dementia really catch up to him, which I think will happen long before 2024.

(100,060 posts)He's so bloated, overweight, and out of shape that there's no way he makes it to 2024, and even if he somehow miraculously did, there's no way he would pass the health requirements needed to be president. I would say there's nothing to worry about here.

(11,728 posts)Those Enlightenment ideals, reason, science, etc... while AWESOME concepts, were all at one point, used to justify slavery, colonialism, sexism, etc... The US is a country, like any other country. We like to think we are better because we threw off some crusty old king from England, but we replaced monarchy with land owning merchants who "were the best" because they had the money to be the best.
We need to stop deifying our past and actually pay more attention to the ideals and how WE DID NOT meet them, and how WE MUST strive harder to do so.
Trump may want to run again, but at this point, the Republican party won't dance with the clown, and he doesn't have enough pull with others to be anything but a fringe contender. He will continue to damage Conservatives by pulling the most outwardly racist from their ranks.
It will not happen. He had a shot, he took it. He failed. He can't make any meaningful change to expand his electoral support without backing from the GOP, and they don't want to die as a party.

(1,602 posts)still have an outstanding $80 million bounty on his head for ordering Soleimani's assassination. I don't believe it's been rescinded.
He won't be back in 2024. Once out of the limelight, disgraced and forgotten, narcissists usually tend to go out with a bang.

However Junior appears to have a significant drug problem, and Princess Sparkle Pony is completely vapid, so who can tell? (82,383 posts)Dotard is getting older faster. He's not kept himself in as good a shape. There are 90 year olds in better shape than some 70 year olds.
It's very person-specific. So comparing Dotard only to himself you can be sure he won't be getting smarter and speaking in less word salad over the next 4 years.

(13,542 posts)More rallies and as much TV time as he can weasel his way on to. And constant fund raising. The grift will continue.
I might add, he may even resign and make Pence the pres. for a week so he can get a pardon under his belt.
