35K Allegheny County (PA) Ballots on Hold Until Handling After 5PM Friday Evening by Court Order.

.

PITTSBURGH — As America eagerly awaits the completion of vote counting in a handful of undecided states, more than 35,000 mail-in ballots in Allegheny County, Pa. will not be reported on Thursday, because of state rules and court orders.

The outstanding votes represent 10 percent of mail-in ballots received as of Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Allegheny County, which includes Pittsburgh, according to figures from Rich Fitzgerald, the county executive.

The bulk of the votes are from about 29,000 people who were wrongly sent ballots intended for other voters last month, after an error by the company contracted to send the ballots, Mr. Fitzgerald told reporters on Thursday.

The 29,000 voters were reissued new ballots, indicated by a special mark. Their ballots have to be checked to make sure no one returned two votes. A federal court ordered that they not be handled until 5 p.m. on Friday, Mr. Fitzgerald said.

He emphasized that election workers were not taking Thursday off. “They are preparing for tomorrow,’’ he said.

“We also have another 6,800 ballots — I’ll call them other issues,’’ Mr. Fitzgerald, a member of the county board of elections, said. “They are going to be looked at tomorrow at 9 a.m., again by state order.’’
