Tonight I finally understand why in most companies, when a manager fires an employee, HR or security escorts them out of the building immediately.

Unbelievable that this prick still gets to be president for the next two months.
I hope he just stays in bed and sulks for most of it.

(17,862 posts)I have been fortunate to work for relatively good employers, and, when I was let go once, I actually did unpaid overtime my final week for two managers that I liked and respected. Of course I got glowing references from them for years.

(25,839 posts)but several times I've done so because of an excellent boss. Never a lot, but nonetheless I was willing to put in some time.
A story about a good boss: When my sons were in high school they worked at the local AMC theater. One day the three of us showed up to watch a movie, and the manager said to them, "Hey, a shipment of stuff has just arrived. Would you be willing to help me get it into the storeroom?" We were there in plenty of time before the movie was going to start, so they said, sure. He said, "Go ahead and clock in." They put in maybe 15 minutes, and would have been glad to just do it, but he made sure they got paid. That's a good boss. Another might have taken advantage of the fact they were kids, but he wasn't about to.

Most people learn to treat others with respect. Some of the most respectful are those with the least. Contrast that with so many who have power. On the other hand after this election maybe I should say many and not most. The weird thing is that so many of the people who support him are also kind and caring individuals in most other aspects of their lives. I can't understand it.
I am glad your sons had such a good experience with a manager early in their working lives. I have been fortunate in that regard - having mostly good managers in my career. Also says something about your sons' character to step up when someone was in need.
