Look, I know everyone is having fun pointing out how foreign leaders are commenting on US elections.
What you should really see: our allies are rooting for us. The free world is cheering America on. This is why these allies are so integral to our strength, and sanity.
This is a building in Copenhagen, Denmark, decked out with the American flag as the facade. Denmark is rooting for democracy in America.

Norwegian: Takk
Danish: Tak
Swedish: Tack
Bokmål - one of two official written languages in Norway is based on Danish. Somewhere it gained a k!
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,661 posts)when they created Bokmål in the early 20th century in order to de-Danify the language. For eksempel, kage (cake) became kake, vigtig (important) became viktig. The two languages are still very similar, and if you can read one you can read the other. However, spoken Danish is much different; they sound like they are being strangled.

(10,570 posts)I can read Danish fairly well - my neighbor speaks it and I dont always catch what hes saying. My Dentists office manager is Swedish - which I understand quite well but cant read more than 70%.
I listen to a lot of Norwegian hip hop and rap - every once and a while Ny Norsk will be used and I have to pull out my ordbok.
(Im not a native but have spoken Norwegian for a little over 30 years)

(115,661 posts)to synthesize some of the western dialects and preserve some older forms and spellings derived from Old Norse. I think spoken Swedish is actually easier to understand than spoken Norwegian because they talk a little more slowly and don't run their words together as much. The spelling is weird, though.

(10,570 posts)Some of Sørlandet have a some similarities with Ny Norsk. The further up you go on the west coast (Bergen on up - maybe even Stavanger or Haugesund) the dialects become more unique.
Swedes also dont have the same guttural enunciations as the Danes. The farther south in Denmark you go it gets thick. Same in Norway but not as severe - rareste lærere sounds like different words from Oslo to Stavanger. I much prefer vestland

(17,149 posts)If the US falls, the rest of the world will go on. Without you.
And we will point to the failure of 'the world's greatest democracy' as a way NOT TO DO THINGS IN THE FUTURE.
Guys, I love you all. I hope it works for you, but nothing is static. The flaws in the US system have come to the forefront and they will destroy the union.
Help yourself by being prepared. The US just cannot continue as it is.
