When was the last time something in the U.S. was received with such joy and celebration?

...this election is uniting a huge swath of Americans in absolute joyfulness.

It's certainly a celebration about electing a good man and defeating a bad one, but it's also a celebration of pushing back all of the fascist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, bigots who thought they ruled the nation.

We are united at this moment in celebration of the endurance of our democracy after four years of withering attack by republicans. E Pluribus Unum. America strong!

My friend Ann Wolfe -- the greatest female boxer ever -- posted that today rivals the day that people held in slavery were freed. I like that.

...we didn't have the media then, but don't recall anything like today.

This is a huge uniting moment for most of us, not a thing then.

He's in the Lower East Side, edge of Chinatown area. He says there is widespread rejoicing. His apartment building neighbors all got together for an impromptu party. I believe the entire city will be celebrating by tonight.

...but you're right. Ending war was unifying as hell.

And the ticker tape parades were amazing.

Celebrating Obama in Grant Park
By Monica Davey November 5, 2008

By late morning Tuesday, Chicago seemed to have been taken captive – albeit willingly – by plans for an enormous election party in the city’s front yard, Grant Park, where Senator Barack Obama, would spend election night. Monica Davey reported throughout the day from park. By the time of Mr. Obama’s victory speech, according to city officials, an estimated 240,000 people had gathered in the park and its surrounding streets.

When horns started honking, people hooting, it was great. I guess they were listening to NPR or watching their phones. Riding home on my bike, total strangers on the street yelled at me “we got rid of the SOB!”
