They are all going to Parler where they can spew conspiracy theories and lies without being "censored.'

I have been away from DU for some time now and honestly, I don't know why I haven't come back here as a safe space before now.

I do push info out on Instagram now and then - but don't really read anything or follow anyone.
Decided I get along just fine with no social networking - turning into a curmudgeon, I guess!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parler
Parler is a United States-based microblogging and social networking service launched in August 2018. Parler has a significant user base of Trump supporters, conservatives, and Saudi nationalists. Posts on the website often contain far-right content,[9] antisemitism,[12][discuss] and conspiracy theories.[15

(60 posts)Part of the reason that we're seeing the nation become so intensely divided is partly due to social media echo chambers. I have family members who, in the past few years have grown INSANELY more conservative (like starting to believe conspiracy theory stuff now) because their Facebook feeds have gradually shown them posts and "news" stories that are more and more conservative and conspiratorial in nature (because of their "like" preferences on the platform). And what's scary is that these family members are well educated folks.
I'm just concerned that if most of the conservatives in our country flee to this new platform, the echo chamber effect will spiral out of control exponentially with them (at the very least, they'll likely be pushed further from receiving legitimate sources of news).
I guess I'm mainly worried that this will further divide our nation and increase the level of misinformation spread in our nation. Someone please make me feel better about this...

(15,649 posts)I mentioned in a reply above that I am frankly concerned about some of my friends who will go there and immerse themselves in a steady diet of conspiracy theories and endless skepticism. I am frankly concerned about their mental health.

(15,649 posts)There was something similar several years back that didn't get traction. I can't remember the name of it. It wasn't targeted toward conservatives but more toward people over 35.

(25,139 posts)He's my senator, so I follow him. But he's also a troll. He posts about once an hour on his verified, govt account. And it's all campaign, partisan stuff. Just imagine if he lost his base to parler?
I really should just unfollow the creep.
But if Cruz leaves FB, his ability to reach swing voters leaves with him.

(81,404 posts)Creating an account and using Parler is free. Signup requires both an e-mail address and phone number.[30] At the point of registration, users have the option of supplying a photo of themselves and a scan of the front and back of their government-issued photo identification to have their account verified by Parler.[52][18] Individual users can set their account to only view Parleys from other verified users, if they choose. According to Matze, the purpose of the verification feature is to allow users to minimize their contact with trolls.[52] Anyone who verifies their identity on Parler is given a red badge, and people considered to be public figures are denoted with a gold badge.[18]
According to Matze, the identification document scans submitted by users who choose to have their accounts verified are destroyed after verification. However, the requirement for ID scans to become verified has prompted conspiracy theories about the site's retention and use of user information.[52][60]
