Eating Chili Peppers Could Extend Your Life, Study Finds

https://www.newsweek.com/chili-health-heart-cancer-1546230

Eating chili peppers could extend your life, a new study has found. Based on research that looked at the health records of half a million people across countries including China, Italy, Iran and the United States, it was found that those who ate chili pepper reduced their risk of all-cause mortality by 25 percent.

The study was carried out by the Cleveland Clinic's Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute in Cleveland, Ohio. The senior author on this study, Dr. Bo Xu, told the BBC: "Our study is not powered to answer the questions of exactly which type of the hottest chili peppers, the mode of intake and amount and frequency, because again that is a point that varies across the studies.

"What is true and consistent though I suspect is that the active ingredient present in the hot chili peppers which is a chemical known as Capsaicin is probably mediating a lot of the potential health benefits."

Dr. Xu however stressed that the data in the research is still preliminary and wouldn't lead to a change in guideline recommendations. The study also found that compared to individuals who rarely or never ate chili pepper, people who ate chili pepper had a 26 percent reduction in cardiovascular mortality, a 23 percent reduction in cancer mortality and a 25 percent relative reduction in all-cause mortality.

If it's hot pepper period, I'll be here forever - Scotch Bonnet and Wiri-Wiri
I just made a huge bottle of pepper sauce.

It's not common to Jamaica - comes from Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Have one hybrid - Scotch Bonnet and wiri wiri - a lovely pepper and of course Scotch Bonnet is as Jamaican as Usain Bolt.

The capsaicin is the beneficial chemical, and it's what puts the heat in peppers.

I can't eat anything with capsaicin without a lot of pain - not just the burn when I eat them (which causes blisters if I even touch the things) but all the way through my system with the residual effects causing pain for days or sometimes weeks. It's gotten to the point that even smelling bell peppers starts my lips tingling.

On the other hand, my parents seldom ate anything with hot peppers or bell in it and they lived long lives. Dad died at ninety, Mom at ninety seven. So maybe there is hope for me.

I've been in situations where I wanted to try new foods, but then found they included some kind of peppers and had to forego the experience.

I make my own curry mix without pepper so I can have curry, same for some other spice blends - but you just can NOT make cajun or creole blends without peppers. They just are not right.

I hope I got those genes. I know my sister did. She's over seventy and still going strong. I'm a few years younger but have had a lot of non-systemic health issues so she will probably outlive me.
