The biggest mistake of Gov. Chris Christies years in office was not Bridgegate, it was his 2010 decision to cancel plans for a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River.
That tunnel was scheduled to open in 2018. But today, we still rely on a century-old tunnel that is so decrepit it could fail any day, forcing the closure of one of the two tubes for repairs. That would trigger an economic catastrophe in the region as rail traffic into Manhattan is cut by 75 percent.
The good news is that the cavalry is on the way. Because Joe Biden, a.k.a. Amtrak Joe, is a big believer in mass transit. And he can jumpstart the project without approval from Republicans in Congress. This will all be on the fast track soon after he swears his oath in January.
This is a really great day, says Tom Wright of the Regional Plan Association. Its not just that Biden loves Amtrak. Were getting a president with the most sophisticated thinking and strongest advocacy on infrastructure in my lifetime. Its an extreme shift.

While we may need to replace the obsolete Amtrak tunnels under the Hudson, we should not be adding more commuter train capacity to New York City.
Instead, companies should open a small branch location in NJ, assign their workers there, and let them work from home.
This way their income taxes stay in New Jersey.

(14,739 posts)People don't work in nyc because they live in nj. They live in nj because they work in nyc and have no other options where to live.
Moving an office to jersey won't fix the job being in nyc.
That's not how it works.

(4,741 posts)If you commute across the Hudson, you pay your full income tax to NJ plus an extra tax that NYC charges anyone who works there regardless of residency, just FYI.
