If that were my five year old in Amarillo Texas

somebody would be paying big time starting with the Killa Con.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/kindergartner-reportedly-dies-covid-19-texas-n1246803

Parents Lastassija White and Quincy Drone told the NBC affiliate that their five-year-old daughter Tagan died suddenly after a short battle with the virus.

"She loved to learn," White said, adding that her late daughter would so fastidious about wearing a mask that she would even remind her mom if she forgot hers.

White said Tagan became very sleepy last week, and then began to vomit, so she brought her to the emergency department where she tested positive for the coronavirus.

Tagan had no obvious symptoms like fever or cough. White told KAMR that doctors said her daughter "would be fine" because it "doesn't affect kids."

Tagan continued to weaken and her parents said they called the ambulance after it appeared that she had stopped breathing. She died shortly after.

More than a few African American parents have spoken out publicly about the lack of care meted out to them and their children by some white doctors.
There are actual studies about the disparities in medical care based on race.

I believe the parents. Please watch the interview about what was done and what wasn't done. That child was dead in less than 24 hours. They were told to treat it like the flu.

I don't know the legal standard in Texas, but where I work in medical malpractice cases, the rule we drill into our medical practitioner clients is "Chart it or it didn't happen." There are doctors as irresponsible as Donald Trump practicing medicine out there.

introduce mandatory classes related to Caribbean history, civics, sociology and political institutions for medical and science and technology students. More than a few are among the most ignorant about their own societies and some of them are selfish beyond belief. We used to laugh when noting that the only faculty where the car dealers had displays of the latest vehicles was the medical faculty.

That said, let me be clear that (as in other fields) there are some very caring, decent and progressive doctors and medical students and there are right wingers in other fields as well.

So I should be careful.

I am 64, overweight although I have lost 50 pounds, have high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and take blood thinners. I would think that the flu vaccine might be a good idea. I don't need anti-vaxxer crap.

is not anti vaxxer crap. It is an additive-preservative added to the vaccine that some are sensitive to - it is ethylmercury. Ethylmercury leaves the body faster than methylmercury (found in certain fish) but it is still mercury and capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. This may be why your dr suggested caution for you:
Exposure to mercury – even small amounts – may cause serious health problems, and is a threat to the development of the child in utero and early in life. Mercury may have toxic effects on the nervous, digestive and immune systems, and on lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes.Mar 31, 2017

the whole point of my post was to note that the doctor may have had good reason to warn the patient considering her many health conditions. Ethylmercury is ethylmercury.

I had my flu shot this year as usual.

Here's what the CDC says:

Flu vaccines in multi-dose vials contain thimerosal to safeguard against contamination of the vial. Most single-dose vials and pre-filled syringes of flu shot and the nasal spray flu vaccine do not contain a preservative because they are intended to be used once.

Your doctor ought to know that. Make sure he gets the single dose version for you.

Plus, thimersol is simply not O!M!G! WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE FROM IT that people seem to think. Without thimersol, there would be almost no vaccines available.

But kids crash quickly and hard. So any kind of systemic illness should have been monitored carefully with full blood/abg, and lung x-rays/cscan. I don't know how much time elapsed between her release and death, but 2 days out would say that she should have been kept in the hospital IMO.
On edit-apparently it was @ 15 hours. Yeah, they screwed up.

but please don't make everything an issue of race.

I don't speak for the doctors. Who knows what they were thinking. We are going to see a lot of patients told weird stuff as they are sent out the door. Texas is in crisis right now and the system is being overwhelmed.

This is what is meant by "death squads." Decisions are going to be made that are ugly. We should be vigilant on who is sent home, but a lot of nonPOC will also be kicked to the curb.

It would be hard to say. It sounded to me like the child worsened at home. If you were the parent in the first instance, told to go home, what would you do? Hospitals are hot beds for infection. If your child had been looked at, and you were reassured that she was sick but would make it, what would you do?

It is not the parents' fault. It is not their fault.

Probably reflect the feelings of a lot of parents whose children have or have had covid. Unfortunately theirs was one who succumbed. They just did as they were told. We are so much in need of leadership on this issue. Fortunately we will but we'll have to wait two months.

This has made the local community not give any fucks honestly. Our covid rates are hugely spiking to 400 to 500 a day now. I see more and more people without masks in stores, the schools are open and just letting kids in without safety precautions, bars are open and packed, restaurants are packed, churches are packed.

Amarillo hospitals are at maximum capacity and we just keep getting worse and worse. I hate this fucking city. Our local government has completely mishandled this pandemic from the start.

Even when it's not about something as fraught as a sick child.

I was an airline ticket agent for ten years, and the things passengers would claim we said would boggle the mind.

And making this about race really muddles things.
