Joe Biden considering Hillary Clinton for ambassador to the United Nations: report

clip

..."One intriguing name being discussed privately is former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to the person familiar with the chatter who spoke on the condition of anonymity. The thinking behind the move was that it would be a way for Biden to highlight the importance of that position in his administration, and that placing her there would raise the prestige of the U.N. itself at a time when global cooperation, and the U.S. role on the world stage, has ebbed."

I will admit that I was hoping that "Mayor Pete" would get that spot, but I'm open to suggestions as to where to place him.

Nothing wrong with "Should'a Been President Clinton" in that spot - but where can we make the best use of Pete's talent and brilliance?

I've said that he should have a position that will give him "executive" experience at a national level. One serious reservation that many had in his candidacy for president was that he didn't have any "national" experience as a mayor of a mid-sized city ( yeah, I know, someone's really digging for an excuse to not like him - right?).
I thought the UN seat would give him that as well as opportunities for "exposure" (being in the news) - and that he certainly would be a qualified person for the job.
No doubt Hillary is - and we would be well served if she were there.
I just want a good spot for Pete to get the "creds" on his card to make him a non-stop Democratic candidate in years to come. He can represent the future of our party.

Given the unusual circumstances in that the Biden/Harris team will not have the access previous transition teams have had in the past, his choices are most likely going to be people with vast experience in areas within their portfolios so they will be up and running day one regardless of what cooperation they get or don't get from trump et al.

Hillary's experience as President Obama's Secretary of State, already having good relationships with US allies and a excellent understanding of the opponents as well, will make it possible to begin mending the relationships immediately as there will be no time needed re a learning curve with someone else without her expertise.

...because of her inspired and resolute rejection of Trumpism.

As someone else noted, she is in the footsteps of Eleanor Roosevelt, but also in the steps of Adlai Stevenson, another national party nominee who did not become President.

Of course, Ambassador Stevenson, unlike Ms. Rodham Clinton, did not win the popular vote and was thus selected by more of the American people than the person seated in the office of President, but it's an inspiring choice.

I hope President Elect Biden goes for it.

I can't think of a better ambassador to the U.N.

Joe isn't waiting for our opinion, anyway. So the way I figure...

She's so used to permanent residency in Republican heads that she'd be their shining distraction, and in a good-cop/bad-cop scenario, siphon off some of the bullshit away from Biden while he does domestic cleanup and rebuilding.

She would keep Republicans so caught up in their old loser mindset and emotional dynamic that they'd not be particularly smart about how they reconfigure their party for 2024. Being without Trump as they are, she'd trigger many to return to their default. Which just lost.

hasn't this woman been put through the ringer enough already? Would she want to put herself in the public eye yet again to be a punching bag for the pubbies? I get the sentiment, and I agree she would be great for the job. I just wonder if she would want to put herself out there as a target again. Let the lady have some peace already.

I'm all for sticking it to the pubbies after all the BS they've put us all through, but, looking ahead to 2024, why give them a target to rally around? You know damned well, assuming she'd even get approved by the Senate, they'd be all over her like fly's on poo. And they would find a way to once again make her, front and center, an issue for the next election. Why even give them the ammunition?

No one seems to want to admit it, but the right's 25+ year campaign against her has been, tragically, very successful and, due to absolutely no fault of her own, she's become one of the most polarizing figures ever in U.S. politics. It sucks, but it's unfortunately the reality. By all reckoning, we have the top office for the next 4 years (though I fear dump's not done trying to rat fuck us yet), but we do need to be strategic (like they have been) and look ahead to being able to hold that office through 2024 and beyond. Does anyone truly believe that Joe would be up for a 2nd term at age 82? It's a very demanding job. (And I think it would benefit the Dems to start cultivating the next generation of leaders for the future.)

The right needs to be relegated to the dustbin of history. So why give them an 'issue' to use against us, to make hay, and rant and rave about?

95. I think the biggest question is whether she would want it, if offered

She was a well-respected Secretary of State, and would have the advantage of being well-known in the international community. She would be able to commute (the Clintons have an apartment in NYC) quickly, and make deals at informal dinners at her apartment that might be difficult to arrange in the public eye. What ambassador to the U.N. would refuse the chance to dine privately with not only the U.S. Ambassador, but with a well-liked former president to serve the wine?

It's definitely not the stress job SoS is, and she could help deliver back-channel messages to other countries that we couldn't do on an official level in Washington (think Iran, for starters).

It's the call of the Biden team, of course, if they even want to offer her the post, but both Biden's new Secretary of State and the country would benefit. So would her successor. As a country, we have a LOT of damage control to take on. Even if she were to take the post, I doubt she would want it for the full four years of Joe Biden's (first?) term. Therefore, she would probably have a hand in grooming her successor, whoever that may be. Said successor couldn't wish for a better hand to show him/her the ropes.

she has earned the right to stay home with Bill and be an integral part of Chelsea's and their thriving grandchildren's lives. Nothing can replace the joy and fulfillment of knowing you are great role models for your children and grandchildren.

She and Bill can poke their heads up periodically to cause their detractors sleepless nights. With current affairs the way they are tomorrow is not promised to any of us. The moments spent with family are more precious than ever.
