Lightning strike destroys Touchdown Jesus statue

A six-storey statue of Jesus Christ in a midwestern US city was struck by lightning and burned to the ground, leaving only a blackened steel skeleton and pieces of foam that were scooped up by curious onlookers yesterday.

The King of Kings statue, one of south-west Ohio's most familiar landmarks, had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock church along the Interstate 75 highway in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

The lightning strike set the statue ablaze around 11.15 pm on Monday night, Monroe police said.

Nah.

But I do enjoy the fact that science-deniers erected a giant, flammable, lightning rod!

4. And do we understand them better than they think we do?

Yes. We know they are hate filled and stupid by their own choice. I feel sorry for people who are smart enough to be able to smell the coffee and are suffering due to the asses who refuse to mask up.

8. No, see. They can pray it away unless it's God's will that they get it.

Then they will either survive because of prayer or, again, God's will comes into play and they die.

Prayer and God's will. Explains everything to them.

If it's good - power of prayer and God's will for them being so pious.

It's it's bad - God's will and they can pray it away (it's a test of faith) or God's will comes into play (again) and they die.

If they get it and get well but give it to others and one of them dies, well, God's will. And they'll gossip about whether or not the dead person was faithful enough. If the consensus is they were - God's will. If the consensus is they weren't, then there's a lot of knowing looks and head shaking. Wages of sin and all that. Lack of faith and assorted other comforting bromides.

Oh, and never forget - no matter what they do or say, they're saved, so they are forgiven. No harm, no foul absolution.

A storm descends on a small town, and the downpour soon turns into a flood. As the waters rise, the local preacher kneels in prayer on the church porch, surrounded by water. By and by, one of the townsfolk comes up the street in a canoe.

"Better get in, Preacher. The waters are rising fast."

"No," says the preacher. "I have faith in the Lord. He will save me."

Still the waters rise. Now the preacher is up on the balcony, wringing his hands in supplication, when another guy zips up in a motorboat.

"Come on, Preacher. We need to get you out of here. The levee's gonna break any minute."

Once again, the preacher is unmoved. "I shall remain. The Lord will see me through."

After a while the levee breaks, and the flood rushes over the church until only the steeple remains above water. The preacher is up there, clinging to the cross, when a helicopter descends out of the clouds, and a state trooper calls down to him through a megaphone.

"Grab the ladder, Preacher. This is your last chance."

Once again, the preacher insists the Lord will deliver him.

And, predictably, he drowns.

A pious man, the preacher goes to heaven. After a while he gets an interview with God, and he asks the Almighty, "Lord, I had unwavering faith in you. Why didn't you deliver me from that flood?"

God shakes his head. "What did you want from me? I sent you two boats and a helicopter."

15. So true.

I check in periodically on the FB page for the church body in which I was raised. The congregations are mostly doing the right thing with virtual services, requiring masks, etc. But there are always a few comments from people whining that they can't worship like they used to and claiming that people just need to have more faith. And while this is a conservative denomination, it hasn't historically been part of the right wing evangelical/political stew. Leadership in recent years seems to be trending in that direction, though.
