Leonard Cohen: Anthem. Fitting for this time and uplifting.

The birds, they sang
At the break of day
Start again, I heard them say
Don't dwell on what has passed away
Or what is yet to be.

Yeah, the wars
They will be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
Bought and sold and bought again
The dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

We asked for signs
The signs were sent:
The birth betrayed
The marriage spent
Yeah, the widowhood of every government
Signs for all to see.

I can't run no more
With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up a thundercloud
They're gonna hear from me.

Ring the bells that still can ring ...

You can add up the parts
You won't have the sum
You can strike up the march
There is no drum
Every heart, every heart
To love, will come
But like a refugee.

Ring the bells that still can ring...

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in.

I have all his stuff. The man was a polymath, and a good man. That's my highest accolade. nt albacore Nov 2020 #3

"Back in the High Life Again" by Steve Winwood for our anthem...

It used to seem to me that my life ran on too fast
And I had to take it slowly just to make the good parts last
But when you're born to run it's so hard to just slow down
So don't be surprised to see me back in that bright part of town
I'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
I'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched me once will smile and take me in
And I'll drink and dance with one hand free
Let the world back into me and on I'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again

We'll be back in the high life again
All the doors I closed one time will open up again
We'll be back in the high life again
All the eyes that watched us once will smile and take us in
And we'll drink and dance with one hand free
And have the world so easily and oh we'll be a sight to see
Back in the high life again
High life
Back in the high life
Oh, we'll be back

Note: Warren Zevon does a very soulful cover of the song. Worth a listen.

And basically binged his entire works, which I wasn't totally familiar with before.

"Anthem" was definitely one of the songs that stuck out most for me, and gave me some hope and inspiration on that very dark day.

What was crazy was that neither I, nor anyone else in the world except his closest family, knew that Cohen had actually passed away two days prior.
