FYI shortages coming

I have a close friend who does the global buying for a national supermarket chain. She deal specifically for baking products: flour, sugar, baking powder, etc and certain spices. She’s seeing shortages across the board.

My point here is not to start panic buying but to keep you all ahead of the curve.

As for myself me and Mrs Javaman bought in bulk last July; flour, pinto beans, oats and quinoa, in
25 and 50 pound bags. Divided them up, vacuum sealed them and stored them in sealed buckets.

Also, I can almost bet that cheese will be in short supply as well give the explosion of cases on the dairy producing part of the country. Buy blocks of cheese (more cost effective), shred it, seal it and freeze it. Cheese only freezes well shredded.

It’s going to be a loooong winter.

4. IKR? And after all this time you'd think we'd have a surplus instead of a deficit.

But, as always, thanks to this administration's refusal to plan.....

I especially appreciate your statement re: panic buying. That was, after all, what threw a wrench into the supply chain and messed things up for many weeks.

It's always good to set aside extra for unforeseen circumstances and to share with those who may be struggling.

Plenty of powdered milk and instant potatoes, etc... We're not big cheese eaters, but I will let friends/family know about freezing. TY

My wife and I retreated to our house in the Catskills about a week before the shutdowns started back in March. For the first time in my life, I had the foresight that there was going to be trouble. We went shopping and stocked up on everything. We were probably responsible for part of the toilet paper shortage!

Since then, when we've gone shopping, it was usually to replenish the stocks we'd used. If we had to, we have enough supplies to last 4 or 5 months.

What a world Trump has given us.

Has anybody noticed a shortage in heavy cream lately? I haven’t seen a milk or half and half shortage...just cream...at every store I’ve been to. Weird....maybe it’s just me. We are in for a tough few months I’m afraid.

I just got a huge thing of toilet paper from Costco as part of my regular shopping. I have plenty of flour and baking powder. Hmmm...maybe I should get some sugar, though. I just ordered spices from Penzey's. I doubt they'll run out.

I guess I'll add some sugar and cheese to my list. I only hope they don't run out of cat food!

11. Since this all started I have become a "light hoarder"

I now keep on hand about a 6 week supply of all non perishable goods. Foods, paper products, cleaning products. I also piled up on wipes and n95 masks when they became available. Don't be angry I did not buy out the store, but I have about 6 containers of wipes, and 4 n95 masks. So light hoarding, no more that what I would need if I was unable to get more over a month plus. I have been a Costco member for years so bulk buying is my norm, the difference is now I don't wait till I am down to the last two rolls, when I open the package, I note its time to buy more, so rather than buy the case of paper towels and replace when I am down to my last spare roll, I now buy the next case as soon as I open the current one so my supply is always "topped off". I also have have a small chest freezer in the garage, so lots of meat, poultry, frozen fruits and veggies, bread, etc in there, but again I have been buying in bulk to save costs for a long time, so no change, just again "topped" it off.

12. I stocked up all summer expecting this.

I stocked a lot of canned goods, beans, frozen meats, and baking supplies planning for this. Half because I expected shortages, but also because I want to limit my exposure to the raging virus and limit my trips to grocery stores.

13. Come up with a meal plan that ensures you get adequate calories.

Many may be surprised by how much water it takes to cook some meals so factor that in and also make sure you can eat w/o having electricity or gas.

With the arrival of winter, water isn't an issue and I have LP gas for cooking. Stuff that require refrigeration can be placed in the basement entry way and frozen items can put put in the storage building.
