Majority of people with COVID-19 going to work, survey finds

https://www.wmcactionnews5.com/2020/11/15/majority-people-with-covid-going-work-survey-finds/

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Shelby County health officials say a major reason they’re seeing more COVID-19 cases stems from infected people going to work and continuing to socialize with family and friends.

In a survey with more than 300 people who’ve been infected, 53 percent admitted to going to work during their infectious period, when they could pass the virus to others.

“When we see people with mild symptoms, they have a new onset cough or feel fatigued or feel a little bit off,” said David Sweat with the Shelby County Health Department. “They do what we typically do in America. They just kind of push through and still go to work.”

snip

The survey also found 27 percent of people with COVID-19 admitted to going to a social activity when they were infectious.

A bit more at link, explaining how covidiots take their mass off at work and become "lax" in social situations.

Once again, I am left wondering how the hell people become this stupid and so egocentric?

Guessing this is pretty typical of those "red areas" of states with soaring covid case nubers.

Mystery solved: Egocentric asshats!

It’s our Capitalist system. They don’t care who gets infected - they’ll just replace dead cogs with new ones. Money is more important, of course.

Plus, many of these people can not afford not to work. Nobody is paying them. It’s infect others or starve. The “stimulus” money all went to corporations.

Wikipedia-The Scopes Trial, formally known as The State of Tennessee v. Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee's Butler Act, which had made it unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school.

2. Joe's team finds some other way to squeeze them, financially, perhaps.

after the trip, but when I talked to her last week she said she had no idea how she caught it 🙄 she was already trying to convince herself during our conversation that it wasn't her fault even though she continued to go see her parents. I really had to bite my tongue to not yell at her that obviously it was her fault. Most of the people I work with think Covid is just like the flu and live their lives like there is no pandemic so I wouldn't have much sympathy if they did get sick.

We do daily checks with EVERY employee and if there are any symptoms, they are immediately sent home (with pay). They must answer several questions about travel and group activities for exposure. If their answers are affirmative, they are sent home to work remotely for as long as it takes to produce negative tests AFTER a 14-day wait.

We've given employees every bit of equipment they need to effectively work remotely. We are looking out for the health and safety of each individual, but also for their colleagues. This approach has allowed us to continue operations without a single hiccup. We have had at least five positive cases, and no one has lost pay, standing, job assignments, etc. Everyone is intact. We have closed the office after each positive test, doing a full disinfection and keeping it closed for two weeks, just to be extra safe.

We are trying to be responsible corporate citizens and showing care for our employees. We think it's the right thing to do, but also good business. We will survive as a business while we're aware of at least seven of our competitors who've closed down permanently, at least in part because they couldn't figure out how to successfully implement remote work processes. I honestly don't get why other executives don't use the same approach.

THIS is NOT going on in the building trades. They would shut a job down because of infections, and those workers would get transferred to other jobs. Can't miss a lick of pay. The General Contractor offers people to get tested once they know they were exposed
to a worker who is out sick, you have a few on site that get tested, the rest refuse, don't want to rock the boat.
Another issue is lack of sanitation. It was dismal before the virus, I can't imagine the horror show going on now. 95% of jobsites have no access to running water, bathroom facilities are a (Honey Pot) dropped on site shared by everyone on the job. No hand sanitizer
lucky if there is toilet paper 2 days before they come clean them. I worked on a job 2 years ago for a major global franchise, they pushed the half door honey pots into closets right off the elevators. There are troughs on the back of them so lots of misses, the stench
when you arrived at your floor!!! Executives were getting off in the same spots we did as the main elevators were not up and running
yet. I guarantee you nothing has changed.

Honestly, with half the country losing their damn minds and partying and going around maskless anyway, how much personal responsibility is someone with a family to feed supposed to take on? If I were feeling sick in a low-mask area, and had to choose between becoming homeless and protecting a bunch of asshats who'd just get the virus from someone else anyway, I would really have to think about it.

(Totally different dilemma in a mask-wearing community, of course.)

Staying home to be safe can lead to losing one's job at worst and a loss of income at best. If McConnell would just allow a vote on a coronavirus relief package, people wouldn't have to choose between doing the right thing and going hungry or getting evicted.

Not only what we typically do. Also what is forced and reinforced (financially, institutionally, bosses, managers, co-workers and family members) in the workplace -- and culturally.

and then OP summarizes with:
"Mystery solved: Egocentric asshats!"

Nope. People doing what they've been conditioned to do since they were teenagers. And you haven't even bothered to mention all the workers that don't even have sick leave. Take a look at the system! We need a reset on what is expected of people!

Two weeks off work, and you’re not even sick (yet)? And you want a paycheck from the boss or a handout from Uncle Sam? Don’t be ridiculous. Oh, and by the way, the landlord wants his rent.

It’s the American Way. And, it sucks badly.

When my kids had chickenpox, they did it sequentially, not both at once. If my mother had not bussed out to take care of them for me for two solid weeks, I would have lost my job, period. Rent, groceries, childcare — everything depended on that job.

So yes, some of these people are no doubt Trumpers blinded by devotion to their orange god. But I’d bet dollars to holes in donuts that the rest are trapped in the American System.
