I'm currently on an Asian series binge and highly recommend "The Empress Ki" (Korean, loosely based on historical events) and "The Rise of Phoenixes" (Chinese, loosely based on a novel of the same name).
They are LONG and full of lots of backstabbing and scheming - akin to today's Republican Party - but much more intelligently conceived. It is also fascinating to see how engrossing and romantic stories can be without people getting naked. I also love the subtitles where they call women "wenches" when they actually mean something much worse.
Handsome men, beautiful women, fantastic costumes and wigs!
Until recently, I was on a Turkish series binge, but I think that I've seen about everything they have and am hoping for some new ones to pop up.
My favorite Turkish series is "Black Money Love," which is one of the LONGEST series I have ever watched. I adore the main couple (Omer and Elif), but the sub-couples are fun too. The main villain is one of the most dastardly noir villains I have ever seen.
One new Turkish - only eight episodes called "Ethos" - has recently been acquired. I've only seen the first two episodes so far, but it is very well done.

For fun, though, I also have enjoyed re-reviewing some of the wonderful "Crash Course" YouTube videos by John Green that discuss World and US History. The segments are relatively short, geared towards MUCH younger viewers, occasionally a bit "hokey" and John literally speed-talks so I always use the "CC" function. But they contain a LOT of relevant information that too many Americans do not seem to know at all.
Here is one relevant example:
Here is the complete list of Crash Course videos. https://thecrashcourse.com/
They cover a lot of subjects and have other presenters as well. But John Green and his courses, which deal primarily with World and US History, along with some literature, are the ones I know best. I used to embed links to some videos into my PowerPoint university presentations when I was an Adjunct Professor, following my first "official" retirement in 2007. The students seemed to get a
kick out of them and they got some good discussions going.
You don't need to subscribe to view the videos.

(25,816 posts)I almost always have to give up on American series because after a while they just get stupid. Just how they get stupid varies by the series, but it makes me crazy. I think the underlying problem is that there's a pretty strict formula out there for these things, and no room for any deviation.
I certainly can't do it.

(811 posts)If I seem like I am jumping up and down and yelling RED ALERT. It's because I AM. The only reason to invite them is to get them to trash the whole Michigan vote and appoint their own slate of electors. This can happen whether the vote is certified or not. WTF!

(12,344 posts)I guess they don't want to anger Trump by not going, but, I also don't think they want to open this huge can of worms for Trump. The fact that the two canvassers backed down yesterday means they don't have the stomach for tbe backlash. Also, they were all just re-elected. Now they will call their own legitimacy into question to save Trump? That seems like a bridge too far for any legislator.

(31,893 posts)All MI counties have certified, but the state as a whole has not.
In view of the fact that GOP leaders of the MI legislature are meeting with trump at the White House tomorrow, I'm not so sure it's time to stop panicking yet:
Trump invites Michigan Republican leaders to meet him at White House as he escalates attempts to overturn election results
DETROIT President Trump has invited the leaders of Michigans Republican-controlled state legislature to meet him in Washington on Friday, according to a person familiar with those plans, as the president and his allies continue an extraordinary campaign to overturn the results of an election he lost.
~snip~
Trumps team appear to be increasingly focused on Michigan as a place where Republican officials on the states Board of Canvassers and in the legislature might be persuaded to overturn the results.
~snip~
Joanna Lydgate, the national director of the Voter Protection Program, said that there is no basis in fact or law for failing to certify the election.
The presidents unpatriotic behavior is reaching new heights with summoning state legislative officials to the White House, she said. But the legislature has no role in certification, as its leaders have already publicly admitted. This raises serious legal and ethical concerns about the presidents conduct but it will not alter the outcome of the election.

This has gone way past recounts and ludicrous accusations of vote fraud. Trump is openly trying to bribe and/or bully state legislative officials into altering the outcome of an election.
