When the vaccine is available for general population access.....
should those that refuse it because they believe it is a hoax and freedumb....
Should they have access to community/taxpayer funded healthcare....ie, hospitals when there is a demand outstripping supply of hospital beads? In other words, why should an individual decision that eschews public health and denies the reality of the virus....why should these resources be applied to their healthcare when they contract the virus? Might be an effective start for the Biden Presidency to address a key problem with beating this virus. And staunch the bleeding in our exploding healthcare costs.
Do you think we could make PSA's that explain this to the "Covid is a hoax" spreaders who will refuse vaccinations?
It is the Trumpsters who are killing our country, destroying our healthcare system, and economic future. I am through playing nice with these fools.

(8,784 posts)I doubt we'll see it, but it's really not much different than requiring vaccinations for school, or seatbelt laws, or helmet laws.

(29,289 posts)I'd just tax or limit their access to healthcare resources. Why punish the front line workers to further infection, dealing with those that refuse to protect their health?
If they truly believe, accept the consequences.

(29,289 posts)But I do think that health resources are finite. In terms of frontline workers and beds. Those that believe their ideas that COVID is a hoax and 2) vacs are are a hoax; when they get sick, they should go to a hoax hospital.

(58,785 posts)Populations ALWAYS include fools and troublemakers, and our principle isn't that only those who fall in line with those in power are entitled to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Most hard-core conservatives, btw, tend to disagree strongly with the Declaration of Independence and can be counted on to point to many unworthy groups and individuals we should cut services to.
In this case, there's no way refusing all healthcare to anti-vaxxers would be good for them, their hapless families, and their communities.
We should expect some sensible bureaucratic decisions that also act as carrot-and-stick. Most employers and schools, for instance, will require vaccinations. But in any case, most communities will be able to bring case rates down below what's considered containment without resorting to having hospital security escort sick anti-vaxxers off the grounds.

(112 posts)antivaxxer or trumpist to have serious concerns about a vaccine that has been rushed without knowing short or long term side effects that could occur. There is difference in refusing polio, mmr or flu vaccine that have been around for decades than this!

(11,206 posts)I have said to people I wish if things get to a point where triage is necessary that people who refused to mask up in public should be the last ones to get care.

Do we refuse treatment to diabetics who refuse to lose weight?
Do we refuse care to women who get pregnant even though they didnt use birth control?
Do we refuse treatment to AIDS patients who didnt practice safe sex?

(35,855 posts)For the same reason that we shouldn't wish a happy illness on them, we should not refuse access to health care.
Anyone ill exposes other people without regard to political affiliation. When we hope they get sick, or deny them access to health care, we are **also** hoping that illness on their family and friends (who may well be democrats) and on their informal providers (who may also be democrats).
There will be a number of individuals who are unable to get the vaccine (early - because of the order of distribution; later because of incompatible health conditions). Denying the vaccine refusers access to health care increases the risk to all of us.

(18,626 posts)The anti vaxxers need to be isolated and ostracized as much as possible. Ban their kids from public schools for starters. Whatever that can be done to squeeze them needs to be done.
