Most people understand that, and try to be gracious when they lose. They congratulate the winner, lick their wounds, and go on with their lives. In politics, winning and losing are commonplace things. If you are in politics, you will eventually lose. There's no way around that.
There are some, though, like Donald J. Trump, who feel as though they are owed their high positions. They cannot believe it when they lose, and make up all sorts of lies to explain their loss, since they will not and cannot believe that they could have lost.
Such people rail at the "unfairness" of their loss. They say they were robbed of what was due them. Such people are sore, angry losers. Once we see that, we know that they never should have won in the first place. They did not deserve the high position they later lost.
Ungracious people live and die unhappy. They cannot see beyond themselves and their precious egos.
Donald J. Trump has only a few years left of his life. They will be miserable years of complaints and anger. His end is because of his beginnings, though. It is because he is the petty narcissist he allowed himself to be. He will learn the lesson, at some point, perhaps on his deathbed. However, he will not be able to go back and correct things, nor will he be able to change the miserable egotist he has always been.
That is his fate.

(1,297 posts)Always loved the story from Carole King bio of how her fundraising led her to temporarily change the lyrics to "Sometimes you win, sometimes you win"!
There's a lot to be said for being flexible.

(115,614 posts)First, he's never before held or run for any political office. Elections are always a zero-sum game (unless you have a parliamentary system), and having won once, he never again thought about the possibility of losing. More importantly, he's a narcissist who, even when he's "lost" a deal or a business situation in the past (e.g., multiple bankruptcies), he never actually lost because he either got bailed out by his father, his father's estate, Russians, or banks that were inexplicably willing to lend him money. In some cases he simply cheated or stole his way out of a problem. He has never accepted or internalized the fact of really losing, that is, that something has been permanently and irrevocably taken from him. He can't accept it and he's freaking out. He will always be miserable and he deserves it.

(16,920 posts)but I've never had such a strong objection to anything you've ever said until now: "He will learn the lesson,......"

(21,998 posts)As a New Yorker for more than 4 decades, I've watched Trump since the 1970s.
He has always been the same:
Angry
Jealous
Petty
Egoistic
Selfish
Stupid
Obnoxious
The list could go on.
In short, Trump is a disgusting, miserable human being. I will never understand how anyone could look at him admiringly.
I must disagree with you, MineralMan. On his deathbed, Trump will never have the epiphany you suggested. I'm fine with that.

(1,602 posts)He's 74 years old, has never really had to live with the consequences of his own actions, is a malignant narcissist, psychopath, and has a vindictive, sadistic streak. He has also evinced a certain degree of cognitive decline just over the last four years. These are generally not the kind of people that have massive epiphanies. His current last-ditch strategy comes down to the mistaken belief that politicians are willing to sacrifice their careers to support him in his fight. Yet the last four years have proven, over and over again, that not only does the Trump mystique not pass on to other politicians but that once you've sold your soul to him, he will be as likely to attack you as support you. In other words, even in defeat, it is still all and only about him. No, he won't change.
