(26,044 posts)True story: the FOF was developed because, back in the 1960s, lots of Roman Catholics still went meatless on Fridays, and outlets in predominantly Catholic communities were being hit hard by the de facto boycott on what should have been one of the biggest days of the week. One of the franchise holders pitched the idea of a fried-fish "burger," but national management initially balked, fearing that introducing fried fish to their restaurants would create unpleasant odors. So, they initially came up with a different meatless alternative: quite seriously, a burger that replace the beef patty with -- a slice of pineapple. When that bombed, the company tried out the fish sandwich, and it became a huge seller in those places where meat wasn't eaten on Fridays.
