I was a hospital RN and had a job where I traveled the building. It was 3p-11p shift. On the Cardiac Rehab floor there was an older gentleman who had not eaten all day. I was informed that on that dark rainy night his wife (who walked on forearm crutches...from polio, I think) was going to walk to car go home and make him cream of wheat and bring it back to him. The kitchen staff had gone home. I asked her to wait and see if I could find some cream of wheat for him. I went in this huge commercial kitchen (where I was not supposed to be), found a huge box of cream of wheat, a pan way too big for one serving and a stove that was the size of my car. I made it for him, cleaned up all evidence I had been there and took it to him. He sweetly told me that it was the best Thanksgiving dinner he ever had. I was just grateful I saved her the trip.
It has been quite a few years, but I still feel pretty good about it.

(15,536 posts)That is a special memory for you and those are the things one remembers all their lives. That man probably never forgot you and what you did for him.
Thanks for sharing that special story. It reminds me that there are good and caring people in our country.

(8,804 posts)particular nurses like that when I have been hospitalized.
In one case, I called in when I got home to compliment a certain nurse to HR. They told me someone would call me back.
A man called me back and wanted the Nurse's name and what she did. He went on to say he would take her down a single rose on her next shift, and give her a paid day off for her above the call of duty kindness. He mentioned that he intentionally did it in front of all the other nurses on that ward.
It turned out, he was the CEO of that hospital, one of the largest hospitals in Denver. Needless to say, I was blown away. Of course that was twenty years ago..........
Nurses are the front line in any hospital. It is a shame the way the Hospital Corporations are mistreating them and overworking them, especially since the Virus Hit. They are all angels...........

(1,160 posts)I understand trying to rustle up food in a big kitchen after hours. Cream of wheat doesn't sound so special, but when it's prepared by someone who loves you and a friend, it means everything.

(6,926 posts)and I was quite afraid I would mess up something. All for one little bowl of cream of wheat.
But the smile on his face and the fact she was just sitting there made it worth my small effort.

(14,854 posts)I'm giggling at the size of the kitchen stuff.
When I visited the Air Force Academy in Colorado we passed by the meal prep area. There were metal long rectangular open containers - maybe 2 ft wide and ? 15 ft long. 😄
You did a good thing. 💖

Why doesn't everyone stop to help?
"The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: 'If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But ... the good Samaritan reversed the question: 'If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?'"- Martin Luther King Jr.
