'Then Fox News called Arizona for Biden.'

ut in the final stretch of the campaign, nearly everyone — including the president — believed he was going to win. And early on election night, Trump and his team thought they were witnessing a repeat of 2016, when he defied polls and expectations to build an insurmountable lead in the electoral college.

Then Fox News called Arizona for Biden.

“He was yelling at everyone,” a senior administration official recalled of Trump’s reaction. “He was like, ‘What the hell? We were supposed to be winning Arizona. What’s going on?’ He told Jared to call [News Corp. Executive Chairman Rupert] Murdoch.”

Efforts by Kushner and others on the Trump team to persuade Fox to take back its Arizona call failed.

Trump and his advisers were furious, in part because calling Arizona for Biden undermined Trump’s scattershot plan to declare victory on election night if it looked as though he had sizable leads in enough states.

With Biden now just one state away from clinching a majority 270 votes in the electoral college and the media narrative turned sharply against him, Trump decided to claim fraud. And his team set out to try to prove it.

of winning the Electoral College by a pretty significant amount.

And that's why he had that rally in Nebraska where he left everyone out in the cold.

Then the entire dynamics of the race changed. Georgia was just gravy. It left Biden in the same position as Trump was four years ago. At least three paths to victory requiring three states, one of them being Pennsylvania, needing to be flipped.

The call injected life back into the Biden campaign, which was reeling as it watched tallies in swing states such as Ohio and Florida grow insurmountable Trump leads.

That's exactly how we were feeling in our house! Thanks for the interesting article.

Fox News polling team is pretty good and they are all about the math/science only. There is a clip from 2012 where Karl Rove tries to claim Romney still has a chance and Megyn Kelly walks through the studio to where the polling analysts are . One of the best moments from Fox News.

dynamics of trump's plan to claim "victory" on election night.

They actually did Democracy a favor.. the person at the Decision Desk who called it is named Aaron Mishkin.. and is "a registered Democrat".

I felt comfortable with the call when it happened, but if that was the data he was basing it on, ugh, it was bad.

Just before election night I remember a few programs and anchors talking about how, initially, it would appear as if he was winning, by virtue of the order of which states/votes got counted first.

The Chump has been yelling about fraud since 2016. Remember his appointed investigators? Not to mention the red states who spent tons of money trying to find fraud and came up with nothing.
