Cindy McCain Is Reportedly Biden's Top Pick To Be Ambassador To The United Kingdom

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to offer lifelong Republican Cindy McCain the position of ambassador to the United Kingdom, The Times of London reported Saturday. McCain, the widow of the late Arizona GOP Sen. John McCain, endorsed Biden in the presidential election after years of acrimony between Donald Trump and her husband.

Trump incredibly denounced the senator, a Navy pilot in Vietnam, for being shot down and locked up in Hanoi for five years as a prisoner of war. “I like people who weren’t captured,” slammed Trump, who dodged serving in Vietnam because of a dubious complaint about “bone spurs.”

Cindy McCain’s support for Biden was key in helping turn Arizona blue this election. She even recorded an emotional political message extolling Biden’s friendship and cooperation with her husband that was played at the Democratic National Convention in August. Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win Arizona since 1996.

If McCain, 66, would like the job in London, “it’s hers if she wants it,” a Biden insider told the Times. “She delivered Arizona. They know that.” It’s still unclear if McCain — an anglophile with long, important connections to Britain — would accept the offer

Ambassador positions are frequently given as rewards for crucial presidential support by either party.

She had a lot to do with Biden winning Arizona.
Like her or not, the McCain name for Biden carried a lot of weight.

As for the Navajo, I suspect they're mostly Democrats and were Biden supporters and Trump haters, regardless --- god bless 'em.

I don't know how much time an ambassador is expected to spend in their post, but McCain's children and grandchildren are here. She's involved in several non-profits and she's still the chair of the third largest Anhauser-Busch distributor in the US.

The UK is a reliable ally with which we have cordial relations. We are not in conflict with them. So, the job is pretty easy. It is really a sinecure.

It’s that the position is largely ceremonial because, well, there isn’t a whole lot of major conflict and the possibility of war when precarious negotiations break down.

Which Cindy McCain is used to.

When Caroline Kennedy was appointed ambassador to Japan, conservatives complained she wasn't qualified, dredged up decades-old Kennedy scandals as if it had anything to do with her. But the press covered her, I was aware of what she was doing. Good publicity. These last four years I've had no idea who the ambassador was.

Even though Kennedy is a little shy, she did an excellent job. McCain is a little shy too. I fully support shy women ambassadors.
