Aidan Ellison: A man fatally shot a teenager in Ashland, Oregon for playing loud music Thanksgiving

A man in Oregon fatally shot a teenager Thanksgiving week after getting upset that the 19-year-old was playing music loudly in the parking lot of an inn that the two were staying at, police said.

Robert Paul Keegan, 47, shot Aidan Ellison on Monday at the Stratford Inn in Ashland after the pair got into an argument over Ellison playing loud music, Ashland Police Chief Tighe O'Meara told CNN.

Around 4:20 a.m. during their argument, Keegan pulled a gun from his coat and fired a single shot, striking Ellison in the chest, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Keegan was arraigned on November 24 and indicted for charges including second degree murder, first degree manslaughter, unlawful possession of a firearm, and recklessly endangering another person.

He pleaded not guilty to all four charges on Friday. He is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail without bail and is set to appear in court on February 21, 2021.

The killing of Ellison, a Black man, resulted in collective mourning from his community alongside calls against racism, which O'Meara said was "valid."

If the guy didn’t have a gun it wouldn’t have come to someone dying. Sounds like he shouldn’t have even had one to begin with. You’re probably more likely to die of gun violence in the US than in a lot of countries that we consider to be war zones or something

I don't know if should not have had a gun because he was probably already stressed out after being evacuated from wild fires, but if he did not have a gun this would not have happened.
As a victim of night noise I can understand the anger. Many of us in my neighborhood have called the police and had night noise shut down so often over the years that the noise makers send everyone in the neighborhood advanced notice and shut down at the exact minute stated by law. If it's too loud we call the police and they force them to turn it down. We've had glass and doors rattling from sound systems - situations where you can't even talk on your phone or hear your own radio/TV.

That said killing a young black man over night noise is murder.

But only if you’re black.

I’m interested in the ‘unlawful possession’ charge. Further proof that laws prohibiting possession for valid reasons must be enforced.

He really should not have had the gun. So how did he have custody of a three year old?

Loud music is no reason to murder anyone. Hope he goes to prison.
That said shouldn't we all show a little more consideration for one another. Night noise is bad enough - let alone night noise in a hotel/motel/inn parking lot where people who have been evacuated are staying.

"I understand that there are legitimate tensions surrounding matters of violence against people of color in the US, and this situation speaks directly to that," O'Meara said.

"I want to do whatever I can with the police department to navigate our marginalized community member relationships and find a way through this."

Most chiefs would have had the tactical squad at least standing by.

This asshole has lived his 47 years and just took another man’s life who was just beginning his adult life at age 19.

What a selfish asshole.
