The mysterious silver monolith in the Utah desert has disappeared

A tall, silver, shining metal monolith discovered in the desert in southeastern Utah -- which prompted theories of alien placement and drew determined hikers to its secret location -- has now disappeared, the state's Bureau of Land Management said Saturday.

The monolith was removed by an "unknown party" sometime Friday night, the agency said in a Facebook post.

"We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, referred to as the 'monolith,' has been removed" from BLM public lands, the post said.

"The BLM did not remove the structure, which is considered private property."

Bureau of Land Management - Utah
Here is our official statement on the rumors surrounding the "#Monolith:" We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, referred to as the “monolith” has been removed from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands by an unknown party. The BLM did not remove the structure which is considered private property. We do not investigate crimes involving private property which are handled by the local sheriff’s office. The structure has received international and national attention and we received reports that a person or group removed it on the evening of Nov. 27.”

9. There is speculation that it was made by the late artist John McCracken or an acolyte of his.

Whether that's the case or not, who knows? He said he wanted to put some of his work out in the wilderness to be discovered later... but Internet sleuths using Google Maps believe it was placed there in 2016, long after McCracken's death.

I didn't see it come or go.

I looked out the window and it was there, a couple of hours later it was gone.
