1- the genocide of the Indigenous Americans

I mean there may have been "assignations," but they'd hardly count as darkest moments.

...literally "owned" other people and considered them less than human by raping them, beating them, and treating them like animals. It's even sanctioned by the US constitution.

the civil war and slavery into one thing. It may have been wrong not to separate them. But, it WAS what the civil war was fought over.

Ask somebody to rattle five things off the top of their head, it is interesting to see how the unconscious mind works. I would also say there's a lot of recency bias in your picks, i.e. events that happened during your lifetime. Vietnam, Kennedy, and Trump are all very important to people in a particular age group, but how does their broader impact stand up?
