When I tried to read @stevenmnuchin1 the law that contradicts his bogus claim to get people less COVID relief, he questioned whether I'm a lawyer.
Just want to make sure he has the answer: one of us is a lawyer, and it's not him.
Rep. Katie Porter
@RepKatiePorter
I didnt just fall off the turnip truck, @stevenmnuchin1. Ive been holding Wall Street bankers and predatory lenders accountable for more than a decade.

(138 posts)have done very good jobs of grilling Republicans. Remember when Rep. Omar made mincemeat out of that war criminal Elliot Abram? Rep. Ocasio Cortez's grilling of Michael Cohen led to the NY AG's fraud case against the Trump Organization.
We've have some fantastic "grillers" on our side.

(3,624 posts)Notice how the Squad is told 'be quiet, focus on your district, stop making yourself a national figure' while Katie Porter (also a relatively new Congresswoman) is cheered on and encouraged to have a national profile.

The purity of the remaining Dem senators is impeccable, but Al was an order of magnitude better than them at holding republic creeps accountable.

(6,828 posts)I think I was responding to the nice things posted about Elizabeth and Katie and AOC and the rest of the squad.
Not a grudge, just a sadness such a brilliant for the people intellligent guy like Al gets "lynched" for something most would consider no big deal. i dont think its within Al's character to do something hurtful to a show biz colleauge. somebody he's on a uso middle east tour with. what good came of it? everybody lost except republics.
plus her connection with roger stone types. (he may have been the guy that made this public to begin with?)
we should not allow such manufactured half truths and corrupted testimony to make us sacrifice our best.
I'm also peeved about the guilty until proven innocent vibe and the collective rush to judgement.
Can't change the past, but I hope we learn from it.

PS - saw Al in New Haven early March, about two weeks before covid hit

(2,260 posts)That whole episode was a right wing hit job. Im still angry about how that entire episode played out.
Al had the brains and the finesse to get to the innermost truths during his questioning of witnesses. He would have marinated and then grilled that obnoxious Mnuchin.
Katie Porter did a great job herself. Hadnt realized before how much of a prick Mnuchin is.

(2,129 posts)You know quite well that was part of a skit they worked out. It was not spontaneous, it was scripted with her approval and forewarning. Even she said so but no, she was ignored in favor or the tar and feathers gang.

Porter was born on January 3, 1974, and grew up in the small farming community of Fort Dodge, Iowa.[4][5] Her father was a farmer-turned-banker.[6] Her mother Liz was a founder of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting.
After graduating from Phillips Academy,[3][7] Porter attended Yale University, where she majored in American studies, graduating in 1996.[8] Her undergraduate thesis was titled The Effects of Corporate Farming on Rural Community.[9] She was a member of Grace Hopper College (formerly Calhoun College) at Yale.[citation needed] Porter also interned for Chuck Grassley during this time.[10]
Porter later attended Harvard Law School, where she was the Notes editor for the Harvard Womens Law Journal.[11] She studied under current U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, and graduated magna cum laude with her Juris Doctor in 2001.[6]
Career
Porter clerked for Judge Richard S. Arnold of the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in Little Rock, Arkansas.[11] She practiced with the law firm of Stoel Rives LLP in Portland, Oregon,[11] and was the Project Director for the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges' Business Bankruptcy Project.[12][13][14][11][15][16] Porter was Associate Professor of Law at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas School of Law.[11] In 2005, she joined the faculty of the University of Iowa College of Law as an associate law professor,[11] becoming a full professor there in 2011[17] before joining the faculty as a tenured professor at the University of California, Irvine School of Law, in 2011.[8][18]
Porter's textbook Modern Consumer Law addresses consumer laws in light of DoddFrank and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.[19]
In March 2012, California Attorney General Kamala Harris appointed Porter to be the state's independent monitor of banks in a nationwide $25 billion mortgage settlement.[20] As monitor, she oversaw the banks' implementation of $9.5 billion in settlement reforms for Californians.[21]

(194 posts)California District. MSM has ignored Rep. Porter's significant gains, and yet keeps hyping the Republicans' netting about a dozen seats out of 435 while pretending that a Mid-term election has same dynamics that a Presidential year has. Thank you to all the Chuck Todds for your incessant enabling of Trump and his Republican mob in order to increase profits at the tragic expense of degredating basic pillars of our democracy.

(11,535 posts)reminds me SO much of a conversation I was having with the ICU diagnostician when I was deathly ill in 2010. He described what he thought was going on (turned out to be Staph A in my heart and while he had nailed the general diagnosis, he couldn't possibly know the agent, at that point), then asked me what I thought. I said:
"I think that, in this conversation, only one of us went to med school, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't me. Let's go with your opinion."
He did a remarkable job of keeping a straight face, but later told he it was hilarious.
You geaux, Ms Porter! A rising star in national politics.
