I know people think I'm kidding. I'm not. The trajectory of America is clear. We have one party divorced from reality, willing to cripple government and attack democracy, ignoring oversight laws, and a system that allows for their minority rule. No country can survive this.../1
...which means: It is time to break up America. Putin wins. East and West coasts can be one country (we are divided from Alaska by Canada, so...not unprecedented.) Let each state vote where it wants to go. One time subsidies from each country allowing residents to move once.../2
...I know people think "This is insane!" No, it's not. For much of my life, the Soviet Union was an impenetrable fortress, a monolith. Then, it fell and broke into multiple countries. The unsustainable is not sustainable. Red America hates blue America. They want to kill us..../3
...and the GOP stays silent, because its craven, anti-America leadership - like @RonJohnsonWI confessed - will allow democracy to be torn down if they get to keep their jobs. *This is unsustainable.* Let red America care for themselves. They'd be in for a shock about how much...4
money they get from blue states. Yes, living beside an impoverished, poorly educated, anti-science theocracy would be difficult, but it's what they want.
We can choose to do it. Or, as happened with Soviet Union, wait until it cant hold. But what we have is unsustainable.

(94,490 posts)When India and Pakistan were partitioned became someone thought "this" was abstractly Moslem and "that" was abstractly "hindu", millions of people on the "wrong" side of the border were killed.

(63,221 posts)The huge problem is that there are many Democrats in red states and whacked out cult members in blue states.
I don't really know how you can solve that problem unless there is some kind of subsidized relocation program. There are so many factors to consider.
It's just not that simple, but this situation is not tenable. I think civil war will be inevitable if we don't come up with a solution that is acceptable for a majority of people.

(2,231 posts)States will have to choose alliance for regulation. European Union. Would you really want to tough it your own, Alaska? Idaho, I'm going to ask Virginia, what would Delaware? The Fed will survive. Exchange rates are important. Banking will be important. Defense will always be in the mix. Sadly, our connection in life is the safety of the dollar bill. But, when the divide becomes entrenched, we use sanctions. Some work for the common good. Some put the tribe first. There will be some red faces.

(10,279 posts)But, first I think that term limits on Senate and House, redistricting to get 1 person / 1 vote, and retooling the voting rights act could get a fair deal for everyone.

(7,968 posts)Take, for instance, my home state of Michigan. We have progressesives and we have racist reactionaries. Seperating the country ultimately doesn't solve the systemic problem.

(7,506 posts)Ok so Texas decides to be a red state. What happens to Austin and Houston? Or the research triangle cities of North Carolina? Or red rural areas in blue states?
To compare the U.S. to a forced together state like Czechoslovakia is false. Those regions have ethnic, cultural and religious ties that don't exist as a unifying force in American states. I know some people on the coasts think everyone in places like Alabama are religious rednecks but they are not. What about Black people in Mississippi who don't want to live in a place where whites would assuredly be making the laws? What, move away from family and jobs?
It is tempting to think we can solve this situation with a nice, clean break. Doesn't seem practical to me.

(14,862 posts)so I worry about them, too. Hopefully we stay together.
I suppose there could be relocating ... but that's pretty crazy too in a way. People may not want to leave for various reasons.

(1,955 posts)I know they stated they are pissed off, and that there's no way we can manage it. But I'm starting to believe this things a freight train heading our way. The other side is gone, completely lost it. Don't forget, donny has not given the command to take up guns and fight. I promise you, that statement is coming. I hate this fucker!
